10 Money-Saving Tips for New Parents

Congratulations! You and your friends are happy on the road. My husband and I were so excited when we found out we were pregnant with our first child, but then it was the real deal. An extra person in the house means more expenses in every way, and a complete change in routine. Becoming a parent often comes with sacrifices, but that doesn’t mean your bank account has to be completely depleted as a result. There are many ways to save money when welcoming a new family member.

1. Don’t buy maternity clothes

I will explain more about this one. Of course, as a pregnant woman, you need to expand your clothes to accommodate the growing life in your belly. I bought a few new things during my pregnancy, but I didn’t buy maternity clothes. They are reasonably priced, and since there are stages to pregnancy, you may end up wearing a maternity shirt for 1 or 2 months alone. What I did was buy clothes from my favorite thrift store (or thrift store), but in a larger size. Head to the store for extra savings. That way, you can still get items at a competitive price, but blend in with the general crowd. When the baby comes out and loses weight, you can save them for the next baby, give them away, or make adjustments and continue to wear them in the postpartum phase.

2. Throw it at the children

There is no doubt that baby showers are the best way to collect free baby products. If you decide to create a registry, make sure you choose something you need, as opposed to something you might want. Don’t be afraid to choose big. A friend of mine surprised us with a new crib, which ended up saving us nearly $200. I also recommend applying for a gift card to a major store, so you have the ability to purchase a variety of baby items. Gift cards are also convenient because they can be saved for later use.

3. Throw a Diaper Party

Not all men like to attend baby showers. For this reason, some may prefer to have a diaper party. A way for guys to get together, share food and/or drinks, and just eat together. The creativity of gift giving is taken away from the simple fact that men are asked to bring only diapers as gifts. What we did was ask the boys to bring diapers of any size, and believe it or not, we didn’t need to buy diapers for the first five months of our baby’s life! Also, leftovers are perfect for the next baby. If you don’t plan to have more children, you can give them to other families who are expecting them, donate them or sell them locally.

4. Get a receipt from the hospital

Many hospitals receive a number of free samples, and coupons for products to help new mothers heal. I received free breastfeeding supplies, baby related brochures, nipple cream samples, pads, and aspirin. All those free samples add up, so accept what you get from the hospital.

5. Breastfeed / Pump if you can

Breast milk is not only the healthiest choice for a growing baby, but also the cheapest. A mother can save her family at least $1,300 by choosing to breastfeed. Unfortunately, this is not always an option. Issues such as returning to work, attachment issues, health issues and more can prevent mothers from breastfeeding. In this case, choosing to invest in a breast pump will still save you a lot of money. You can borrow, rent, or buy them manually.

6. Return / sell unwanted gifts

If you managed to get something you didn’t intend to use, return it or sell it as soon as possible. Waiting too long can make it difficult to sell them. You can also donate these items to other people who may be giving birth in the near future.

7. Second-guessing your purchases

Before buying baby items, ask yourself if you NEED to buy them. We thought about buying a changing table, and then realized that using our bed, or a blanket on the carpeted floor would be perfect. We keep a basket of wipes and diapers, so whenever we need a quick change at home, we can do it anywhere in the house.

8. Order free samples online

There are several reputable companies that provide free samples to mothers. You can get formula samples, vouchers, special offers and more.

9. DIY baby gear

Save money by doing some of the things for your children. Shop online for homemade slings, booties, diaper bags, bibs and more. It’s a great way to save money, and it’s a productive use of time.

10. Homemade baby food

I can’t stress enough how much money you will save by making your own baby food. Store-bought foods have limited nutrients, and they are expensive, with limitations in quantity and quality. Homemade baby food means YOU are in control of what goes into your baby’s system, as well as taste, quantity and more. In addition, raising a healthy child means that you can save on medical expenses in the future.
