How To Handle Being A Widow

When a husband loses his wife, his love, his friend, the magnitude of the loss does not hit him immediately because he is almost always in denial.

When I lost my husband 10 years ago leaving me 2 months pregnant with 2 small children, I thought my whole life was over. I didn’t know who to turn to and I was hoping my friends would understand what I was going through and stop what they were doing by rallying around me 24-7.

Well, it shouldn’t be and I’ve come to the sad realization that it’s up to me to pick up the pieces of my life and step into the big shoes my husband left behind. I gradually accepted my new role and became stronger. The loneliness was unbelievable but I held on, knowing that God had not forgotten me.

Each night seemed darker than the last and only the birth of my daughter brought a smile to my lips and joy to my sad heart. Four years later, when I look back on the difficult times I had to endure, I realize that it was only because of God’s grace that I made it through.

Who would have thought that my dearest friends would turn their backs on me, whispering behind my back that they don’t want to associate with widows around their husbands? I was no longer welcome at the meetings attended by the couple. I found more refuge with my children and threw myself behind raising them in the best possible way.

I suggested that nothing and no one would stop me. I feel that it is my duty to do all that I was created to do. I have adapted the following and live a wonderful and fulfilling life:

1. I started to pray like I never did before and let God take over my husband.

2. I completely changed my attitude and started finding things to thank God for every day.

3. I accepted that if I wanted to be happy, it was up to me and I began to find joy in the smallest things.

4. I refused to feel sorry for myself and started looking for someone I could help.

5. I realize that being a widow is not a life sentence and people will treat you the way you want to be treated.

I am now a successful woman who motivates others and finds joy in life. I take nothing for granted and I thank God who has graced me and my three beautiful children for his infinite mercy.
