Positive Changes Achieved by Exercising Mind, Body & Spirit
My story details my struggles as a 23-year-old single, divorced mother of three, six, four, and one, and then shows how I can use it to change my life and claim my own power. My constant emotional companions are self-pity, anger, guilt, and self-loathing. I suffered physically, mentally and spiritually. In 1980, I was making $80 a week, receiving a $300 a month grant, and living in fear that we wouldn’t survive. I was afraid of life and worried constantly. I smoked, ate unhealthy food, didn’t work and spent hours watching TV. My mind was constantly focused on what everyone else in my life needed to change in order for me to be happy. Because I couldn’t change other people, I thought I was a failure and couldn’t do anything good.
Through Alanon’s help and advice, I realized that I had a choice and that I needed to change. I listened to my own conversation. It was negative. I replaced my words “I’m stupid” with “I’m learning” and “I’m worthless” with “I’m enough”.
One goal is to quit smoking. Studies have shown me the negative effects of smoking and I don’t like the fact that I am addicted to smoking. I have tried many times to quit smoking. Success was achieved when I used visualization and affirmations to quit smoking. Affirmations are simple statements you say to yourself, such as “I can”…”I am good enough”…”I am successful.” Saying affirmations works because your subconscious mind creates what you say. However, I was gaining five pounds a month and my math skills figured if I continued, I would be over sixty pounds in a year. Determined not to go back to smoking to eliminate the weight gain, I turned to strengthening and exercise.
When I started working out, my muscles hurt and I wanted to quit because I didn’t see results quickly. I say affirmations to help me get the job done. Not only did my physical strength improve, but so did my mind and outlook on life. Focusing on affirmations made the practice easier because I was thinking positive things. As my body reaped the benefits of working out twenty-four hours later, so did my mind. I saw during the day that I will repeat the confirmation.
By combining exercise and conditioning, it helped me with my daily struggles. While I was in an uncomfortable situation, I began to connect with the uncomfortable feeling that I was working on and the affirmations came to my mind. They helped me gain the confidence I needed to overcome my daily fears and insecurities.
My mind was more at peace because my body and mind were working together as one. Positive energy filled me. Not only did I learn to accept and love myself, but I had more strength to deal with being a single parent.
This simple technique of saying positive affirmations while walking, running, or lifting weights is a great way to increase self-esteem and learn to love yourself, mind, body, and whole spirit. I wanted to share this exercise technique with affirmations so I created the “Power of Positive Aerobics”.
