The Benefits of Swimming Over Running

Whether you choose to run or swim, both help you lose weight and improve your cardio. The benefits of swimming alone outweigh those of running for several reasons.

What is good about swimming?

  • resistance caused by water – strengthens the body

  • Burns calories

  • Lowers blood pressure – good exercise for the heart.

  • Weightlessness of water – no stress on the joints, lengthens the spine

As a result of resistance

The main natural advantage of swimming is the effect of resistance. Water is 1000 times denser than air, so when you swim it’s like exercising without dumbbells. Water itself is your weight training.

You get a full body workout when you swim that puts less stress on your joints. You engage the muscles of the upper and lower body. These include the legs, abdomen, upper and lower back, arms, shoulders and chest.

Like weight training, swimming engages and tones muscles due to resistance. Although running is a good cardio exercise, it does little to improve an active muscular body.

Burns calories

Moderate exercise is classified as keeping your heart rate at 50-70% of your maximum heart rate.

Strenuous exercise runs at 70-85% heart rate. After vigorous swimming for 30 minutes, you can burn up to 300 calories. This may vary depending on your weight. The heavier you are, the more calories you burn. By burning 500 more calories than you eat each day, you can lose a pound of fat per week. Okay, that doesn’t sound like much. But think long term. After a month, you can lose about 4-5 kilos – almost half a stone. Multiply that by 6 months and you’ve lost 2 stone of body fat.

Why does swimming help the heart work more efficiently?

When the body is upright (for example, when running or jumping), the heart has to work harder to pump blood and oxygen to and from the lower extremities. This increased demand on the heart can lead to high blood pressure – not good for the heart.

The American College of Sports Medicine says: ‘Swimming works the cardiovascular system, but it doesn’t raise blood pressure too much.’ Because the body is in a horizontal position when swimming, the heart has to work just as hard. There is almost no gravity involved, so the blood pressure remains constant.

Lack of water

Another advantage of swimming over running is the lack of water weight. At the end of every stroke – breaststroke, freestyle etc, your body is stretched. Because your body is held in place by water, you can stretch as you move. The spine can then lengthen, widening the space between the vertebrae.

Physiotherapists encourage patients with disc problems to swim because of this effect on the spine. This takes pressure off the disk.

Benefits and risks of running

Running in general has great benefits.

This reduces the chances of an agreement:-

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • depression

  • Heart disease

It gets better:-

  • Bone density

  • Weight control

The risks of running long distances without a trainer to supervise, however, need to be considered. They can advise you on nutrition, rest and proper running technique. For safety reasons: – A medical examination to check the condition of the heart, biomechanical problems or other risk factors is mandatory.

Marathon running boosts the immune system. It causes the body to produce too much cortisol to reduce inflammation. Advice for runners is to increase vitamin C, get plenty of sleep and avoid outdoor stress. It helps in recovery and boosts immunity.

In short

I don’t want to take runners away from what they really want to do. The health benefits are undeniable. However, long distance running puts a lot of stress on the ankles, hips and knees.

Swimming has benefits for strength, weight loss, lower stress and cardiovascular endurance.

There are no bad ideas about swimming except that you have to learn to swim. It can be a problem for many who were not introduced to water in childhood. I say it’s never too late to learn. Swimming lessons are inexpensive and there are plenty of pool instructors nearby wherever you choose.
