For BIG Changes, Start Small

We often know on some level that we are not living the life we want. We may even have clear goals – but frustratingly, we can’t seem to make long-term, lasting changes in our lives. Despite setting clear goals, deciding on a plan and taking action, we continue to lose our way and find ourselves stuck where we started – or, lost in thought, in The place is worse than before!

Perhaps part of the problem is that it’s too easy, in the rush of enthusiasm that follows the decision to change, to get carried away and try to change everything at once. We can try it – and there is evidence that it really works for a few people. However, if you are one of the many who have tried and tried and tried again, becoming frustrated and exhausted along the way, here are some tips on how to move forward that may work for you.

If you want to change every aspect of your life, try discipline by starting small! This is a simple but very effective way to make real changes and growth in all areas of your life.

First choose an area of your life that you want to grow. See where you are now and where you want to go.

Then, decide on one simple small step that moves you closer to what you want.

Now, make a promise to yourself that for the next week you will support and maintain this simple small step.

– If you want to quit smoking and currently smoke 20 a day, you can promise to stick to 18 a day!

– If you want to lose weight, you can promise not to eat 2 biscuits with your morning coffee, instead of the usual 3.

It really doesn’t matter what the promise is. The important thing is that you plan to keep it!

The most common reason people fail to achieve their goals is setting goals that they think are out of reach. Will it be so easy to give up trying to fly?

Keep it small, and it’s not only easier to keep your promises – but also harder to break them!

After a week, review how you agreed with your promise to yourself. You may find it helpful at first to get a trusted friend to ask you how you are doing. It is better if they also work on their own promises, and you can support each other.

If you kept it for a week – FANTASTIC – give yourself a pat on the back :o).

Decide on any other small steps to reach your goal.

Remember to keep it small and keep moving forward.

Keep your focus on distance, not distance.

If you haven’t been able to keep your promises to yourself, now is the time to really ask yourself what went wrong. What can you learn from this? Did you really intend to keep your promise? Is it too difficult? From your answers to these basic questions, you should know if the change is still important to you. If you decide it is, find ways to make the goal more attainable. Think of something smaller, or something you can do more easily – and try again!

There is no success or failure here – an opportunity to understand yourself better, to look deeper into your resistance, and ultimately to learn what works for you. Everything we do (or really don’t do) has a reason – even if the reason isn’t obvious. Many of us have ‘bad habits’ and sometimes do things that harm us. Exploring and understanding the reasons and beliefs that underlie our actions opens up our options for change, allowing us to choose to behave differently.

To get the ball rolling, the secret is to keep the steps small. If you continue with this process, you will soon find that you will be making measurable progress towards your goals and you will probably look back and wonder why you found it so difficult. How many babies do you know who gave up on learning to walk because they kept falling over? Later in life, when they are fed a diet of self-limiting beliefs, they develop these wrong ways of thinking even more. We, as important but fearful parents, teach them to ignore their natural tendency to practice and improve and instead ‘give up’. As adults, we forget what babies still know.

There is a second, less obvious benefit to the process I just mentioned. Confidence and self-esteem both flow and thrive from the practice of making and keeping promises – especially when our promises are to ourselves!

Try it! I’m sure you’ll be surprised!

Fear of taking action is the single biggest reason for holding back in life and taking small steps can help overcome this fear. This allows us to gain control, build confidence and change our lives. Any ‘wrong’ decisions or actions will be small, easy to learn, and easy to repeat if needed. In this gentle way we can develop the habit of living, learning and moving forward!

“Taking small steps and keeping it simple, failing and learning from it is the best way to explore the unknown. Make failure happen often, quickly and easily.”
