How to Stop Childhood Obesity – Cook at Home

Two-thirds of American adults are overweight, and half are obese, an alarming statistic. Unfortunately, it’s not just adults who are affected by obesity, but now children are getting in on the action. 33% of American children and adolescents are already overweight or obese (defined as weighing at least 10% more than recommended for their height and body type), and a new study shows that 20% of four-year-old American children are already obese. The long-term effects of this trend are dire and include the future of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, increased cancer and sleep apnea. If nothing is done now, our children are headed for a health crisis – one that is preventable.

So what should parents do? Along with cutting out junk food and turning off the television, there is one simple step parents can take to help their children avoid obesity and its negative consequences. Prepare meals at home. It is no coincidence that the obesity rate for children and adults began its trend at the same time that we abandoned dinner in favor of fast food and family visits to restaurants. Not only are many of these foods loaded with too much fat, salt and sugar, the portions are large and often lacking in nutrition, especially if you order from the kids’ menu. Home-cooked meals, even restaurant favorites made at home, are healthier options. But preparing dinner at home doesn’t have to be a time-consuming task. Delicious and nutritious meals that the whole family will enjoy can often be prepared in 30 minutes or less. Follow these tips to help your child lose weight and make their stomachs happy. The bonus? These simple steps will help parents stay lean or lose weight too.

  • Portion control – Serve dishes from the kitchen instead of bringing the full meal to the table. Also keep in mind the size of the child as children should not be given the same portion sizes as adults. For younger children, 1/3 cup of cooked vegetables and a 2-ounce hamburger (ie half quarter of a pound) is enough. A typical serving size for an older child is ½ cup of cooked vegetables and a 3-ounce burger.
  • Reduce Fat, Salt and Sugar – Even home cooked meals are sometimes high in fat, salt and sugar. Remove the salt when preparing dinner and add it carefully to the table. Buy unsalted chicken, salt solution. Use olive or canola oil for frying instead of butter or shortening. Build your own burger with lean ground beef and/or ground turkey. Read ingredient labels and keep sodium intake to 15% RDA and fat intake to about 20% RDA.
  • Bring on the vegetables – Children who are exposed to a variety of vegetables as children are more likely to eat their vegetables as they grow up. However, very shy children require creative parents. Soups, full of junk food like beans or cabbage, are childhood favorites. Chopped carrots or peas can be added to homemade Macaroni and Cheese or other kid-friendly casseroles. Make your own healthy pizza – add pizza crust with sauce and spinach and top with a little flavored cheese. Carrots, zucchini and other ingredients can be chopped or pureed and added to spaghetti or meat sauce.
  • Stimulates the imagination – Serve a variety of colors and textures on each plate. If something is good, it can be eaten! Add some eggs and cheese, wrap in a tortilla and serve with a green salad or fruit. Quick, easy and nutritious for kids and parents. And don’t forget the role of fragrance. Prepare food that starts with garlic, onion and chopped pepper, or that includes spicy herbs like rosemary, anise or cloves, fills the house with a hot smell that will make the children eager to eat healthy food at home. .
  • Let the kids help – Three-year-olds can help set the table while older kids can mix dry ingredients or wash fresh vegetables. Let them help prepare the weekly meals, giving them a choice between two options, ie potatoes or rice, green beans or broccoli.
  • Teach and model good eating habits – Children who practice good eating habits are less likely to become overweight or obese adults. Turn off the TV during dinner. Eat together as a family. Studies show that children who eat together and eat with their families do better in school, have better relationships with their peers, and most importantly, have better relationships with his parents. Don’t force children to clean their dishes at any age. Encourage the child to try at least one of everything on his plate, but do not make the child continue to eat when he is no longer hungry. Model healthy eating habits by following this advice.
  • Watch out for empty calories – Americans now consume 25% of their calories from beverages such as soda, caffeinated beverages, etc. That’s a lot of calories for a little nutritious food. Give children water, milk, or 100% fruit juice to drink with meals. Soda, milk shakes, and other sugary drinks should be limited to once a week or less. Energy drinks should never be given to children because the high sugar, caffeine and other stimulants can lead to kidney and liver damage.
  • Choose good snacks – Keep tasty and healthy snacks on hand like bananas, mandarin oranges, baby carrots and cookies (unsalted). Snacks can also be prepared quickly at home. It only takes 10 minutes to mix muffins or quick bread. Store-bought baked goods are often loaded with unhealthy hydrogenated fats and contain more sugar than you can use at home.
  • Plan Your Meals – Plan your meals and prevent childhood obesity. Take half an hour a week to decide what foods to eat. Not only does meal prep take less time than food, but shopping becomes a quicker task as well. Don’t know how to prepare food? Use a simple weekly meal plan booklet, sign up for an online meal service, or ask a nutrition/health coach for help.

Childhood obesity is a major public health problem in this country. Our children may be the first generation to have lower survival rates than their parents due to a major health problem caused by a preventable disease – obesity. Fortunately, we know how to solve this health crisis; help our children become more active, limit junk food, and encourage healthy eating habits – by cooking at home.
