Special Fertility Diet
As many studies have concluded, a body mass index (BMI) that is too high (> 30) or too low (< 18.5) can lead to hormonal imbalance and is therefore considered a major contributor to malnutrition. My BMI, however, has always been normal (around 20), and I believe I'm generally healthy, but I've struggled with anorexia for years. It wasn't until I met with a reproductive endocrinologist that I began to wonder how my diet was doing.
I know that exercising too much can have a negative effect on my chances of getting pregnant, so for the last 10-15 years I have been careful to only exercise in moderation. I did not drink or smoke cigarettes or drugs. And I considered my diet healthy: fiber, fruit, nuts, seeds, bran, oatmeal, lean meat (if I decided to have it). I have been eating potatoes, feta cheese, and the occasional vegetable to add some variety to my diet.
Although I never bought sweets and rarely bought bread, I have to admit that I never turned down the bagels or donuts that my co-workers sometimes brought to share. I also didn’t eat one or two. However, I have managed to maintain a weight of 115-120 lbs by compensating for high calorie consumption at work with nothing but fruit for dinner at home. . Weight was never a problem.
So, I was surprised when my reproductive endocrinologist diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is an obesity disorder. Or so I thought. I soon learned that PCOS had more to do with insulin resistance than actual weight. Because of the frequent consumption of sugar, it is not surprising that I also suffered from it.
The first thing my doctor did after hearing me describe my diet for the week was to suggest a change in diet. He advised me not to eat sweets, rice, bread, pasta, tortillas, corn, potatoes, and fruit for at least six days a week. I could have a day where I could eat whatever I wanted. (He didn’t believe in the longevity of such a strict diet.) Knowing that fruit played a big part in my diet in the past, I was at a loss as to what to eat. My doctor assured me that I have many options: meat, vegetables and legumes of any kind.
My doctor believed that my diet had a direct impact on my chances of getting pregnant and encouraged me to follow his diet plan carefully. I did. For a few weeks. I even lost weight without trying – by replacing fruit with salad. The cysts eventually disappeared, and I was finally able to conceive.
While following this simple fertility diet, I did some research of my own. One of the studies I read talked about research by Jeffrey B. Russell, MD, from the Delaware Institute for Reproductive Medicine, who evaluated the diet of various women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) . He found that most of those who ate less than 10% protein and more than 60% carbohydrates produced low quality embryos. Conversely, those who ate high protein (at least 25% of their diet) and relatively low carbohydrates (no more than 40% of their diet) had better eggs and embryos.
Other studies confirm that a carbohydrate-free diet is a viable treatment option for conditions such as PCOS (at least in terms of reducing symptoms), as it lowers insulin levels and helps weight loss. Controlling blood sugar through a healthy diet and exercise can help treat diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. Regardless of whether you are at risk of any of these conditions, if you want to increase your chances of getting pregnant, you can reconsider your diet. If you eat too many carbohydrates, reducing their amount may be the secret to jump-starting your fertility.
