The Taming Of The Shrew – Er, Uh, Calves

If a boy could grow up on a family farm for 30 years and not love most of the animals, I don’t understand. I have loved them since I was old enough to know them. Each type of pet is unique in its appearance, behavior and attitude. And each animal within a species is also unique in these things. I learned to read most of them early on and knew their intentions. Dogs have come a long way as far as I’m concerned and I’ve seen very few of them that I don’t like. I have been bitten by three dogs in my life and two of them were my own fault. The other was from a small dog that jumped up behind me and nipped at my heels as I approached his owner’s house. He didn’t hate me, he just warned me that I better not have bad thoughts about his relatives.

But this story is about a calf. Nice little gangly bull. They are born with long spindly legs that take about 24 hours to gain enough strength to walk or run. A bright little nose like her mother’s, but more beautiful. He comes into this world knowing very well how to find his mother’s milk and this is what is often in his mind from a very young age. Cows and calves are rewarding animals to approach and care for. Ours has always been easy to handle and returned displays of affection when treated like this.

But the fact is, I have yet to see any animal that does not respond to good and loving behavior, even wild animals. I admit that there are many animals that I have never had close contact with and some that I would really like to try.

I didn’t think much about the fact that why our animals were gentle and easy to take then, but since I got older, I now know that those who took care of them, all took care of them and they knew it. We have always tried to breed enough cows and bulls to provide a constant and sufficient milk supply, as well as breed suitable cows for the cows every year. We usually had 4 dairy cows and their offspring were raised to be sold, to replace older dairy cows, or to be slaughtered as cattle. In addition, we kept a large bull for service.

Calves, when they are first born, are usually quite skittish, until they are gently handled and rubbed, hand fed, etc. But they will soon overcome it when they go through the routine. We never let the cubs run with their mothers in the fields, but we kept them in the cowshed during the day until they ate greens. Then, we tied a rope to a long piece of rope and took them outside the pasture and barn to a grassy area and tied them to a stake in the ground. so that they can graze during the day. It was a job that I was often asked to do, mainly because I loved it and no one else did. But it’s an experience.

When I was maybe 6 or 8 years old, I was a small caterpillar and probably weighed no more than 40 or 50 pounds. When the calves were young, they only grew up to eat grass, and there was no problem. I have made them fearless, so it is a common practice to bring them to the pole I have prepared. But when they gained 30 or 40 extra pounds that I didn’t, things started to get exciting. Young calves love to run and when you double your weight there is nothing you can do about it. But I was barefoot and could often fly with them, hanging on to the rope with all my strength. They already knew the area we were going to, and luckily they slowed down a bit when we got there.

One day I remember, really the only tragedy I remember, the same situation as the last two sentences of the last line. When I caught the calf, stronger than I, at the gate, he knew what he was going to do, and he flew, almost bringing me down, but I hung on for his life. The area we went to was down a small path and at the beginning of the path it was about 20 meters down a hill with gravel on it so it wouldn’t fall. By the time we got to the top of the hill and started going down, I was almost airborne…taking 3 to 4 feet with each step. About the time we got to the bottom of the hill, I lost my footing and was clawing at the gravel with my elbows and chest, losing control of the rope. Man, that hurt. As I started to calm down again and tried to get up, I thought… I wonder where that stinky calf went. I know I’m not fit to chase him around the farm. But when I looked up and looked up, there was his nose in my face, and you could almost read an apology in his expression. I took the rope and we slowly walked towards the pole.

Things like that made me love animals I believe. Even pigs and pigs learn to recognize you and show love. Pigs are so active and fast, you hardly have a hand to pet them. But soon the older and the fat ones will know that you are the one who rubs and rubs them and will come to stand by your side to see if you will root them out today. The phenomenon that is a little strange to me is that, if you have a pig or a small pig and they let you touch them, you can scratch them with the lower part of the side with a small stroke and they will lie down and look like normal. if they are sleeping. They seem to enjoy it more than most animals. But again, almost any animal will appreciate a scratch and/or scratch.

Although some animals can be trained to do things they should not do, animals will be as God created them, and will do as they please. Man is the only rebellious creature that he has made.
