What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Grass-Fed Beef?
Now on, and let me add a lively debate about the benefits of grass-fed beef and beef. As with any argument that becomes very emotional a lot of claims and misinformation enter the debate. This short article will try to address some of the issues, but will remove the “meat politics” that enters the debate.
First, there are two coherent definitions. Grass-fed beef, which we will be talking about here, is beef that has been fed entirely on grass throughout the animal’s life. Grain-fed beef doesn’t mean it’s been grain-fed all its life. During most of its existence, it was fed grass, and before slaughtering the cattle it was “finished” with grain. Many nutritionists and organic farmers have criticized this method, saying that beef is a waste of nutrients.
So let’s look at the two using price, taste and food as three bases of comparison:
1. Price. As the grass-fed beef debate has gained momentum, in response to this demand we are seeing grass-fed beef popping up on the market. The first thing you will notice is the high price. The reason for this is simple: feeding grain gives the cattle more, and as a result lowers the price per pound. This is reflected in lower prices in the store.
2. Try it. Just looking at grass fed beef compared to grain on the market will make a noticeable difference. The grass will be darker, and that’s because there isn’t the fat marbling you’d see in high-grain-fed meats. By feeding the cow seed before slaughter the cow will not only add pounds at a faster rate but also add fat. This beef will give more flavor.
3. Food. This is where grass-fed beef advocates will stand. They will show the fact that they are low in calories, have more vitamins A and E, and have higher antioxidants. You’ve also heard that beef contains healthy omega-3 fats. While this may be true, the amount of omega-3 fats in beef compared to, let’s say, salmon is negligible.
Saving calories, however, is very important. If you ate 67 pounds of beef a year, which is the average per person in the United States, you could save more than 16,000 calories a year by switching completely to grass-fed beef. This means a few kilos, and if you are trying to control your weight, it would be wise to eat more of the delicious steaks and marble.
The debate on this issue will continue. And we haven’t even gotten into the question of antibiotics, and there are a lot of them. But given the fact that both sides have different opinions, and then throw in all the environmental issues (like having enough green grass to support grass-fed beef) it’s likely to be given we are always a choice. It is up to each of us to determine what is best for us.
