An ant colony consists of males, females and workers. Each colony has millions of ants. When these colonies become too large, the winged males and females fly to new locations and start colonies. Male and female ants fly together. When queen ants lay eggs and start a colony, they shed their wings. Male ants have a shorter lifespan than female ants. Queen ants mate once and use that sperm over the years to produce thousands of offspring.
Ant cultures have an elaborate social structure in which various activities are divided among different ants. Depending on the type of work they do, they appear in green, blue, purple and yellow colors. A yellow ant concentrates on cleaning while an orange ant takes care of the young ants and the new eggs produced by the queen ant. Ants keep their nests clean and have special compartments for waste and dead ants. Queen ants live for many years and produce chemicals that are absorbed into their bodies by workers to let them know the queen is healthy.
