Snooker Cues – Different Types and How to Choose

Below are details on the different characteristics of snooker cues, what the different options are, how they affect the cue and what you should consider when buying a new cue. This is not an exhaustive list but should cover most options.

joints

Snooker cues can be one piece, 1/2 jointed (known as 2 piece cues) or 3/4 jointed (commonly known as 3 piece cues). The combination of 1/2 and 3/4 refers to the distance between the pieces of stone and has been added with a brass band to make the kit more practical to carry. A component is considered better than 3/4 jointed cues which is considered better than 1/2 jointed cues because of the cuts made in the harder wood blocks (all related to the way the vibrations are transmitted to through the cue). Again how much of a difference the average player will notice is another matter but of course the 1/2 combined cue is the most practical. 1/2 jointed cues and 3/4 jointed cues feel different from a playing perspective due to the different positions of the thicker brass. So when choosing a 1/2 or 3/4 combined cue, we recommend going with the cue you are used to playing. No two icons will feel the same when made of natural materials and the feeling is down to the pattern of density throughout the cue. We usually say that it takes two to three weeks of constant play for your body to get used to the cue, so in your mind you can try a new cue because your body will get used to it.

Splicing

The back can be hand shaped with rods, machined or cut straight and painted for a hand or machine look. The price goes up from color to hand tied machines due to the amount of work involved in making the cue and it is assumed that the cue will have a better feel when it goes up in this price range. you. Beginners do not notice the difference in playing styles for different qualities and some professional players are reported to have said that they did not notice the difference between a snooker machine and a hand-made snooker. the view. Hand-spun cues with slightly curved points (as opposed to the sharp points of machine cues) are designed to have a higher surface area of contact between the hard shaft and the shaft. which allows a better transmission of the vibrations in the cue and gives a better impression. Hand-held snooker cues are more attractive in appearance and this will also be considered in the cue to buy. Most people will be happy with paint (the cues are painted black to match the more expensive Ebony) but you need to choose a cue based on your budget, what you want to see is good your icon and beauty. need the cue to play.

forest

Snooker cues are usually made of ash for the shaft and hardwood for the back, although cheaper club cues are available from Ramin. The back is usually made of rosewood that needs to be weighted with machine and hand lead (so the cue doesn’t have to be so thick that you can’t get a good grip on it, to give it equal weight) and the wood. ebony which ‘ Usually needs weight because it is a thick and heavy wood. Ebony cues with little or no lead weight added add more weight and a more natural feel to the cue that many players desire. Ebony wood with a dark brown (under most lights it looks black) is also nice. Because of its rarity, Ebony is an expensive wood and is often used for the best signs. You can also have decorative wood splices on the cue but they do not add anything from a playing point of view and will only add to the cost. Colored splices are usually Sycamore colored. Other hardwoods can be used for backs such as Thuya Burr or Walnut and other exotic woods (such as the expensive Snakewood) can be used for splices or decorative inlays. The painting frame has cheaper low quality hardwood for the back (which is okay if the wood is painted) and ash for the stick.

Suggested size

The recommended tip size for snooker cues is 10 mm and tips can go as low as 8.5 mm but we don’t recommend going below that for two reasons (1. The cue becomes too whippy 2. It may break due to lack of direction). The smaller the tip you have the harder it is to play but if you can control the cue you will have more control over the cue ball on spin. In general, we recommend adjusting your tip to get more spin before moving on to a smaller tip icon.

Cue weight

With a cue weight of 17 oz to 20 oz is the normal weight with 18 oz to 19 oz being the average weight, 16 oz to 17 oz is light and above 20 oz is heavy. The heavier the cue, the easier it is to play (like a bigger tip) and the lighter the cue, the more control you put into the shot (even if it’s easier to miss). It is normal that we stick to the weight you are used to because with all the changes your body will eventually get used to it.

Addendum

Another option could be a sign with a back for a screw extension or a sign that comes with a screw extension that can be attached to the middle.

The main consideration when choosing a new cue to use at the snooker table is budget, then balance how you want the cue to look versus how you want to play. Basically you get what you pay for with snooker cue and you need to choose which features you want and which features you don’t need.
