The Roadmap to PTSD in Horses

When I started working with horses that had a lot of stress that was being held in their bodies, I began to realize that there were other controlling factors that needed to be considered and considered.

It was here that the cause of PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome) was looked at and researched for the first time; Before I started helping a horse that might have PTSD I had to understand what PTSD was, what caused it and looked at its possible origins. When I saw some of the basic research done on people, I realized that it was based on brain function and certain factors or specific events in a person’s life opened doors. for PTSD. At that point in order to better understand how this could affect horses, I felt I needed to look at the comparison between the human brain and the horse brain. What I found in this comparison was very interesting; what I learned showed me that two brains are the same because they are different.

At first I found the horse’s brain to be about the size of a large grapefruit; while the human brain occupies most of the space inside the skull. The next interesting thing found is that the ability of all species to think about specific problems (their ability) is directly related to the ratio of the size of the brain to the size of the body in it. The human brain is close to 1/50 of the total weight and size of the body, while the horse’s brain is 1/650 of its body size and weight.

The next logical step was to look at how the horse’s brain works and this is where I discovered how and why horses think and respond the way they do. Let’s start from the beginning when a horse is born that has to be equipped to survive from birth, I have heard this called “ready for life”. What I can say is that newborns stand on their feet and are fully functional within the first hour of their life. Therefore, at this point in his life, all his actions are controlled by his “brain cord”, which is the part included in the “reptilian” part of his brain. This becomes very important because part of the reptilian brain becomes a storehouse of additional information as the sapling grows and develops. It is during this period of development that aspects of balance control are very important along with the development of better use of eye and head movements.

As the fry grow and develop, they become more reliant on sensuality and group decision-making; not his own thoughts. This stage of development is also controlled by the reptilian part of the brain. it is with the mind that it ensures its survival.

At some point in a horse’s life, a human begins to interact with them, but before we go any further, we need to return to the human brain to find the areas of greatest conflict between these two types.

The human species is classified as a “thinking species” because we tend to use the “frontal lobe” of our brain; it is the largest part of the brain and the part of the brain that allows us to speak, create, think, organize our lives, and in some cases multitask. This part of the human brain became better developed and larger than the horse’s brain, so that it became the most prominent difference in the way each of the two species worked. How well we, as humans, use the highly developed part of our brain when working with and around horses determines the outcome of each relationship.

The way horses learn is by using repetition as well as cues or related cues to create a specific response behavior. The answer depends entirely on what you are doing personally, right now; One important thing is that most horses don’t have much choice about their environment.

Returning to the main focus of this article will make us realize that to understand that the horse, in general, which is a bit difficult to control, is likely to suffer from PTSD. When you begin to realize that you are working on this fact, it becomes easier to work consistently on the problem at hand.

Let’s start by reviewing the level of the horse’s “cognitive” ability and the extent to which horses are better than us, and because they are smaller, we need to understand that no horse can solve stress . same situation as we do. This is where I personally started that it is very difficult for horses to be able to fill their minds with what we humans experience; it is the main reason why the horse does not change easily and it is the main reason for the behavior of the horse. While researching the abilities of horses, I began to understand that because horses are constantly aware of their surroundings and also what is happening around them, most of the stress that is held in the body the horse.

PTSD comes from being in a stressful situation that starts the release of two hormones (Adrenaline and Cortisol) that start an unbalanced situation that forces the horse to be in a constant state. -cautious, insecure, and to many unattainable. . At this point the first situation goes from a stressful situation to a sad situation. Untreated trauma no matter when or how it was created can really cause emotional wounds; Although the cause of the phenomenon is not fully understood, it has a tendency to run deep and in the long run, it can cause chaos in your life and the life of the horse.

Emotional injuries can be treated in horses and are done regularly by releasing traumatic muscles that will improve muscle tone that will encourage recovery from injuries or muscle atrophy that will reduce pain. and then help clean up and help. in the lymphatic drainage by increasing the drainage of the body system. Working with horses suffering from various degrees of PTSD in this way will initiate the release of two “feel good” hormones (Serotonin and Dopamine) which will begin the process of activating the horse. to return to a more balanced state and counteract the effects created. in the distressing state created by previous levels of Adrenaline and Cortisol.
