Headaches With the Weight Loss Surgery High Protein Diet
Why do we get headaches when we switch from a diet high in processed carbohydrates to a diet high in protein? Many patients undergoing weight loss surgery are asking this.
There are, in fact, several reasons for headaches when eating a high-protein, low-carb diet. Most importantly, there are several small things we can do to ease a headache:
First, when we switch from a processed carbohydrate diet to a high protein diet, as recommended by most physicians and surgical weight loss (bariatric) dietitians, we increase our tryptophan intake. A short list of tryptophan-rich foods includes cheese, meat, nuts, and soybeans. Ingesting tryptophan releases serotonin in the brain, which is considered a vasoconstrictor: it constricts our blood vessels. In modest quantities this helps us feel good; but in larger quantities that we are not used to it causes headaches.
To balance the increase in tryptophan (one amino acid – good thing) intake we should include appropriate complex carbohydrates in our surgical weight loss eating rhythm: 2B/1B (2 mouthfuls of protein/1 mouthful of carbs). Here are some smart food choices for your surgical weight loss diet:
Carbohydrates:
apples
artichokes
basil
bean sprouts
beets
carrots
celery
blueberries
cucumbers
green beans
pears
spinach
squash
Fat:
olive oil
Protein:
lamb
Lentils
tuna fish
turkey
Next, we absolutely must make sure that we supplement our diets with essential vitamins and minerals, and on this list I am personally including herbal supplements that centuries of human use have proven beneficial to our health and well-being. Please see the list of supplements:
Feverfew: 200-300 milligrams per day
Ginger: 1,500 milligrams taken in 3 doses (500 milligrams) per day
Magnesium: 1,000 milligrams per day (WLS post-ops are known to be magnesium deficient)
Calcium with Vitamin D: 1,000 milligrams per day
Vitamin B6: 50-100 milligrams per day
Vitamin B complex as prescribed by the physician, oral, sublingual or injected
If you wake up in the morning with a headache, I encourage you to take a serving of Emergen-C. I strongly believe that Emergen-C is healthy for us because in a single dose you get 60mg of magnesium, 200mg of potassium; 60 mg of sodium; 50 mg of calcium carbonate; (your electrolytes); in addition to vitamin B6 and B12; vitamin C, niacin, thiamin, zinc and a few others. If your headache is chronic and you suspect more than high-protein diet than weight-loss surgery, keep a headache diary in an attempt to identify the cause of your headache. Dr. Alex Duarte’s tips for keeping track of these things:
Diet – Diet and food allergies are the most common cause of headaches.
Hormones – Fluctuating hormone levels are known to cause frequent headaches.
Weather – Changes in barometric pressure and other weather conditions can trigger headaches.
Stress – Frequent cause of headaches.
Change in routine – Disruption of normal routine (such as change in diet) is known to cause headaches.
Dental problems or endodontic surgery have been known to cause headaches
Sensory Stimuli: Sight, smell, and hearing can cause headaches.
Hypoglycemia causes headaches.
Herbal remedies for headaches are, in my opinion, more effective and less disruptive than over-the-counter chemical remedies. Try supplementing your diet with feverfew, ginger, ginko biloba, chamomile, capsaicin and/or valerian.
