Does Hypnosis Work?
“Does hypnosis work?” is a question that many people ask when considering using the services of a Certified Hypnotist. And the answer might surprise you.
Over the past 12 years I have had the privilege of working with many people in group and private hypnosis sessions for a variety of self-improvement goals. Over time I began to wonder why some people saw amazing results while others barely registered any progress at all. What worked here?
The research literature on clinical hypnosis talks a lot about the nature of “hypnotizability,” or the degree to which a person responds to hypnotic suggestion. In fact, different scales have been developed to allow clinicians and researchers to classify the likelihood of a person entering a possible trance state.
It has been observed that a strong response to hypnosis is associated with having positive thoughts and the ability to relax, trust and go with the experience. In contrast, more “resistant” types of people tend to be irrational, tense, and fearful.
Is a person’s score on a suggestibility scale the only indicator of whether hypnosis is right for them? My view is that while this measurement has an impact on the level of success, it is not necessarily the most important.
Some people who have difficulty achieving the calm and focused state of mind known as hypnosis make great progress toward the results they are looking for. And a few people responded with wonder to the hypnotic process but it was far from what they wanted to achieve.
One variable that seems to be very important is whether people expect positive changes in hypnosis to be an active or passive process. There are many interventions that promise an easy and effortless path to change.
“Smear this cream on your thighs and buttocks and watch the fat melt away like magic without exercising or changing your eating habits.”
“Fix your laser ears and quit smoking without the struggle or stress.”
“Become a zillionaire just by dreaming.”
These are just a few that you may know. And hypnosis advice should not be put in this category, although I think it often is.
One of the myths of hypnotism is that the hypnotist controls passive “subjects” and changes them. People’s perception of this misconception is completely understandable because the complex psychology of performing hypnosis on stage can encourage the perception of the hypnotist as a superpower.
In fact, the consulting hypnotist is seen as a facilitator who allows the client to engage with the unconscious mind in a beneficial way. That is why I do my best to let my clients know that I am here to serve you “Help people who want to help themselves.”
For example, hypnosis can help people lose weight and quit smoking by giving them the self-confidence that they can succeed if they are willing to apply themselves. Insecure people can be encouraged to face their fears first in the mind, and then in real life, see the fear disappear. However, even the most skilled hypnotist needs you to be an active partner to achieve good results. So does hypnosis work? Well, you have to do it too.
