The holidays are just around the corner and it’s a good time to share and look after each other. There are many parties, celebrations and family gatherings from now until the New Year. And of course, as entertainment increases, so do expenses and the temptation to overindulge in feasts and fine dining.
The average American gains 5 to 8 pounds during the holidays and for most of us it doesn’t seem to go as fast as it should, especially in the winter months when we are less active. There is no need to buy into these stats, you have options. Make a plan together and stick to it. Let go of limiting beliefs about food and rest.
There are many programs sponsored by companies and health clubs to encourage you to maintain your weight during the holidays such as “Maintain Don’t Gain”, “Project Zero”, “Race to Waist” and “The Sugarplum Challenge” . Join the fun and participate in one of these fun projects to help you keep your weight down during the holidays.
The holidays give us many opportunities to test our nutritional and financial strength. To keep our spending and weight in check, there are four essential steps to creating a holiday dining and spending plan.
1- Start with your intention. What do you want to happen during the holidays? Do you want to maintain your current weight (the holidays are not the best time to lose weight)? Do you want to stick to a financial budget or financial forecast for the holidays? Write your intentions, paint them, draw them, whatever you need to do that will remind you of your goals and put them where you will see them every day. State your goal in a positive and present moment such as, “I am excited to eat a healthy diet to maintain optimal health and maintain my current weight during the holidays.” “I’m happy and grateful that I stay within budget when shopping for gifts to share with those I love”. Say it first thing in the morning and visualize it so that it has a mental impact at the start of your day, and repeat it and visualize it before bed. Repeat your intention several times a day like a mantra.
2- Make a plan to deal with the expected and the unexpected. Get ready to take a small portion of Thanksgiving. Chew your food slowly and enjoy all the flavors. Eat mindfully, pay attention to how food feels in your mouth, its texture, taste and how it affects your body. Stop the fork every few minutes and step away from the food. This allows your stomach to catch up. Stop eating when you are full even if there is still food left on your plate and regardless of pressure from others to keep eating (including the voices in your head)!
3- Find clothes that fit well enough that you can wear them at least once a week. It will track you. If you find that your clothes are too tight, change your diet. Much better than relying on a scale.
4- Track your expenses. Write down everything you buy, keep receipts and calculate your expenses at the end of the day to help you stay on track.
