When Positive Thinking Does Not Work
Have you tried positive thinking, self-talk, affirmations, reading books on the power of suggestion, car suggestions, watching “the secret” or taking courses on achieving your goals and still waiting for results? If so, you might be surprised at what you learn.
Research conducted by leading universities in the fields of cognitive and behavioral science proves the existence of so-called “automatic thoughts”, that is, thoughts that come to mind involuntarily and out of nowhere. a lot of effort as an automatic response to some stimuli. These are the thoughts that ultimately determine whether you will fail or succeed.
The average person has more than 60,000 separate thoughts per day, 90% of which occur unconsciously. Our automatic thoughts are generated by our subconscious mind and continue to execute without our conscious input. Think about how many things you do, every day, without even thinking about it. These automatic thoughts are like little computer programs in our unconscious mind. They occur automatically in response to stimuli in our environment.
Although automatic thoughts are good, some of them can create unnecessary limitations on your ability to develop and progress – you can call them “success fans”. They prevent you from progressing or succeeding in certain areas. Automatic thoughts determine how you think, act, and behave. The reactions you see from your environment validate your thoughts.
The main observation is that some “automatic thoughts” are generated by many belief systems (schemas) with groups of people experiencing the same or similar challenges and limitations.
The first step to eliminating the automatic thoughts that prevent you from succeeding in an area is to identify the thought patterns that lead to success limiting thoughts, actions, and behaviors.
The second step is to actively change these thinking patterns (mental change) and incorporate mental patterns that have been shown to produce positive results.
But how do you do that? Ask yourself how many people you know who despite sincere efforts to change their fate
– lead an incomplete or unsatisfying life
– continue to struggle with financial problems
– suffer from self-doubt and its consequences
– is not satisfied with his job and shows up every day to collect his salary at the end of the month
Why haven’t these people succeeded yet? In most cases it is not for lack of trying or good will. This is because our brain is programmed to react unconsciously to certain stimuli in the form of predetermined (automatic) thoughts that guide our behavior.
When the conscious mind tries to initiate a change in behavior that goes against the pre-programmed thinking patterns of the mind, the unconscious mind always wins. In his famous book “Self Mastery through Conscious Auto suggestion” Dr. Emile Coue: “In the conflict between the will and the unconscious mind, the power of the unconscious mind is directly in the field of the will”, that is, in spite of it. if you are willing to change, you will not change unless you change your subconscious automatic thoughts.
Think about how many people you know who fully understand that smoking is bad for their health, but they still smoke. No matter how many people know that overeating not only makes them feel unattractive but also harms their health, they continue to eat more than they should. Of course, there is no lack of awareness here, however, the behavior continues. The latest statistics indicate that less than one in five people who follow a legitimate weight loss program are actually successful in losing weight.
Why is the failure rate so high? Because despite all the good intentions, these people’s mindsets and behaviors remain the same and continue to produce the old unwanted results.
The only effective way to produce results is to change your thinking and behavior. In non-scientific terms, it can be compared to deleting old “performance-inhibiting programs” and installing new “performance-enhancing programs” on your computer.
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”, Wayne Dyer
