Do Dancers Need to Strengthen Their Lower Abs?

Today one of my dancers asked me something that made me a little sad, but I ended up with what I thought was a very good tangent that I will now try to repeat.

For today’s purposes, I’ll just call this dancer “the dancer.” I am too tired to think more creatively than is required. So there.

Dancer- “Can you give me some exercises I can do at home for the lower abdomen?”

I am doing core exercises. I think they are great.

For those of you who still believe that you have to “feel the burn in your lower abdomen” just stop now. This is nothing new or groundbreaking, I hope.

Let’s not joke. We are human and ignorant. We’ve all been looking for that nice burning feeling from working out the “lower abs”. But deep down, I think we all know that this burning sensation alone doesn’t help anything, whether we choose to acknowledge its success or not. We have high expectations for the lower abs.

According to Dr. Stu McGill in his wonderful book, Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance,

“Many coaches and athletes believe that they must do exercises to train the lower rectus and others to train the upper rectus. Myoelectric evidence suggests that there is no distinction between the “upper” and the “lower” rectus abdominis in most people.”

Many are caught up in “hunting for the burn” (I don’t mean this dancer but people in general). The fire was hunting.

I would like to repeat McGill’s observations on the pig spine. The question is, “Does the spine only have a limited amount of time it can move before the disc wears out?” And then they took a pig spine, twisted it a few times, and guess what – Herniated disks… again, like drugs don’t work the same in mice as they do in humans- The spine of Pigs are different from human spines.

So yes, if the rectus abdominis has an upper and lower division, the abdomen is all connected. If you move one part, they all light up. Just try this – Place one hand on your stomach and the other on your back. Now tighten your abs and take a deep breath. You feel like everything just happened at once, don’t you? This is how your abs should work. Together. A happy (non-working?) family.

Anyway, back to the question “what exercises should I do at home for lower abs”.

Me (brother) “Why? What did your teacher say about your lower abdomen?”

Dancer- “I need to connect with them and use them more in class”

Now I should say that this girl is strong and has very good exercise technique. He has thick plates, and his deadlifts are on the badass meter. This makes me believe that he doesn’t necessarily need to do more exercises to strengthen his lower abdomen, but that he should actually use it in class.

And that requires him to live. REALLY living. It’s not the fake breathing thing that dancers like to do when asked to use their breath. You know, where they scream, take one fake breath, and then go back to holding it.

Your stomach is closely connected to your diaphragm. Deep, powerful breathing will help you activate the transverse abdominis (TVA), and as we all know, if there are abs, they are ALLLLLL. By using your abs, you are also making sure that your hip flexors are not stabilizing your spine, and allowing them to do their real job – lifting your leg over your head and holding it there.

One thing weightlifting has taught me is the importance of breathing. When doing strength training, especially when you are at 80-100% of your 1RM, if you are NOT breathing, you will not do the lift. You need the air pressure in your abdomen and all your core muscles. It forces you to breathe. This is a good lesson for dancers- Breathing is essential for technical success.

In dance, breathing is necessary for technical success.

So I gave him exercises to do and core exercises at home, but most importantly I tried to leave him a big message- You can’t change your mind and body separately, they change together these, with your soul. Transformation of mind, body and spirit happens simultaneously.

According to Thomas Myers, you need to stop thinking that you have to “change your mind about your body” and start “changing your mind about your body”.

You can’t just do strength training exercises and expect them to help you in dance class. You must bring your attention to what is happening in your body during the exercise, and look for the parallels in the dance, so that you can apply what you have learned. And you must feel it in your soul.

At the end of the day, when I think of the dancers, and I wish their little spines all the happiness they deserve, I believe that it’s not the encouragement that helps them dance better, but the fact that they those. become more aware of what’s going on in their bodies by gaining new experiences in the weight room. Yes, they are getting stronger, and that is good. But it goes deeper than that.

A smart dancer (who am I kidding, ALL dancers are smarter than the average bear), can equate what their body is forced to do to develop strength in the weight room, and what they are trying to do. take her body to a dance class.

Like “A-HA!” When I did the seated dumbbell press, I felt my glutes for the first time, and could do good pirouettes the next day. It’s very groovy.

So anyway, what I want you to remember is that it’s not always about “under ab strengthening”. Instead, remember that you MUST breathe forcefully when lifting weights, and then take that breathing lesson in dance class.

Remember how your stomach moves when you lift weights, and feel it when you dance.

Remember that your breath, energy and emotions all come from the same place – your “core” (or gut), and dancing requires harmony between these 3 areas, energy, breath, emotion- po, to be completely beautiful. You know how they say, “I felt it in my head.”? This is a truer statement than you might think.

I wish more dance teachers were educated on such important things, because as a young dancer it can be confusing when your dance teacher tells you one thing, and says something else. your current teacher, and your strength coach is saying something completely different.
