Fast Charging Battery Research: Hot, Super High-Tech & Wowing!

Since the popularity of the cell phone, the importance of rechargeable electric batteries has steadily increased worldwide. According to Wikipedia, in 2013, there were an estimated 6.8 billion mobile phones in use worldwide (including smartphones) and 97 out of 100 people in the world owned at least one. These figures include some of the poorest among us. Although many users don’t go beyond phone calls (and less frequent text messages), the growing number of free, good, and easy-to-use apps types and numbers per day. , is gradually drawing many of this category to become ‘core’ mobile users. Many people who use PC as their primary computing device these days, knowing that PC will leave the top position in the computing world soon, are also starting to switch to mobile phones. These factors are expected to lead to a 35% increase in the number of smartphone users by 2020 (or 9.2 billion users, worldwide).

As smartphones become thinner, lighter, smarter, use larger displays and so on, they also become power hungry. Hence, the great need for high-capacity, high-speed charging batteries that can be recharged many times before discharging, for the future success of mobile phones.

There are other important applications too, which depend on fast charging batteries for their health. One is the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Users expect it to be comparable to today’s filling time at gas stations, which is about 4-5 minutes. A very important application is in the smart grid – the intelligent power stations, where the input and output of the user is managed. A battery with a large and fast capacity is needed to store excess energy (when input exceeds demand) and release it whenever a fault occurs. Less critical, though important, are the fast charging batteries used in smartwatches, smart homes and personal health devices (PHDs).

Two years ago, it became clear that Lithium-ion batteries (the best battery technology in use today) would be inadequate in future conditions. There is a big gap between Li-ion technology and the batteries predicted in the future, so it became clear that nothing more than a “quantum leap” (or revolution) in battery technology is enough. That’s why, although it is not yet in the news, it has been launched in many University & Corporate research and scientific research centers to find out that the advanced battery technology future level with features such as: on-demand booking time. a few minutes or even seconds (wow!), low weight (down to half for EV batteries), more capacity, safety (no electrical fires and explosions reminiscent of the Boeing 787 disaster 2013! ), very low cost, easy maintenance and cycle times in the thousands and tens of thousands!

The thought of reaching the “growth factor” of technology in 1-2 years may leave many people in the scientific community, confused lately. But now that has changed! Man, as the frontiers of scientific knowledge have advanced at an unprecedented rate in recent times, today’s researchers, sitting at the pinnacle of scientific knowledge, seem to be providing many solutions in the drop!

So here is a ranking of the most promising technologies that are undergoing research at the time of this writing. (Note: Fast battery research is flooded with many other technologies competing for the No. position in his opinion.)

ALUMINUM-GRAPHITE TECHNOLOGY (see Reference No. 2 & 4 for more information):

At the top of the list is the Aluminum-graphite technology that was developed at Stanford University, USA. He’s amazing for less than 1 minute (yes, 60 seconds!). Although its capacity is about half that of Li-ion, it makes up for this shortcoming with an incredible charging time. Compared to Li-ion’s life of around 1000 cycles, Aluminium-graphite lasts at least 7500 cycles. It’s also much safer than Li-ion – researchers say even if you run through it, it won’t catch fire!

ALUMINUM-AIR TECHNOLOGY (FOR EV) (Reference No.1&2):

In Aluminum-air (Al-air) batteries, oxygen from the air is used in the cathode and therefore no special oxidizer is needed. This type of battery has an energy density that can supply EVs with electric power to put them at par with their gasoline-powered counterparts. The range on a single charge is about 1000 miles! You may need two recharges if you drive up to 2000 miles per month!

The most exciting thing about this battery is that it is half the weight of current Lithium batteries. After half the weight of the battery, you have more weight to carry passengers and cargo (Note: The battery is by far, the heaviest component of an EV. In the Tesla Roadster, for example, the battery takes about one-third of the total weight, so the weight saved, that is, one-sixth of the total, is a lot).

ALUMINUM-AIR TECHNOLOGY (FOR EV) (Reference No.2):

This is a different type of Al-air technology discussed above. Wow because it runs on water (normal and sea water) and has 40 times the Li-ion!

EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT WITH NANOTECHNOLOGY (Reference No.5):

StoreDot Ltd., an Israeli high-tech fast battery company will soon come out with “FlashBattery for SmartPhones”, a global smartphone charger. The company uses special organic compounds created / modified through nanotechnology.

What makes it funny? It can charge any phone, regardless of make or model, in one minute (max)!

In addition to phones, the charger can be used to charge wearable devices, PHDs, tablets and the like. However, there is a catch – even if it’s proven, it still can’t be sold! It may take a year from now to be available in retail stores.

StoreDot will also offer “FlashBattery for EV”, a fast charger for electric vehicles soon. This product is designed to charge a car battery in five minutes!

RADIO WAVES DISPLAY (Reference No.2):

In this technology, the electrical power used for charging is transmitted over radio waves.

Not too surprising, except that it’s wireless and has a range of up to 20 meters. And there is also fishing – not immediately available in the market.

ORGANIC FLOW TECHNOLOGY (Reference No.2 & Wikipedia):

Developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), the organic flow technology produces electricity using an organic substance, AQDS (9,10-anthraquinone-2,7-disulphonic acid) as a carrier.

It amazes us by cutting 97% of the cost of electricity generation (depending on the battery) – while a metal battery gives 1 KWh of power for $700, an organic flow battery gives you power A great deal for just $27!

NANOBATTERIES (Reference Nos.2, 6 & Wikipedia):

The nano battery is developed from a “nano” sized battery (ie the size of 10 up to -9 meters). “Nano” batteries are created by placing two electrodes in a small hole (or “nanopore”) in an electrically conductive film or metal (such as aluminum oxide) separated by a thin film. Many “nanopores” combine to form a complete battery.

Is there anything superlative about them? Yes! The nanopores are so small in size that they cannot be seen individually. They hold up to four times the power of Li-ion and charge in 10 minutes. In addition, they have about 1,000 charge cycles.

NTU’s LITHIUM-TITANIUM DIOXIDE TECHNOLOGY (FOR EV) (Reference No.7&Wikipedia):

This is a technological breakthrough from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. By changing the graphite cathode found in Li-ion batteries into a flexible gel made of titanium dioxide, NTU claims to have developed an ultra-fast-charging battery that holds up to 70% of its capacity in two minutes! In addition to the two-minute charging time, the most impressive thing is the extraordinary life of 20 years.

Electric vehicles are the primary target, the reason for the long life of the battery is expected to significantly reduce the costs that would have arisen due to frequent battery replacement.

NOTE: As mentioned earlier, the research on fast charging batteries is a field that is currently developing full of other promising technologies. Technologies based on foam metal substrates, silicon, sodium-ion, urine-based microbial cells, solar, hydrogen, candles and many others that are under R&D have been rejected while making the above list, which the author believes to be the best of the lot. One notable drawback is Meredith Perry’s “air filling” technology, which uses electricity transmitted through ultrasound for charging. A much-anticipated technology, which has been anticipated by many for a while now, seems to have failed the recent evaluation tests and had to be removed from consideration.
