Vintage Woodworking – Boice-Crane Company’s 3500 Table Saw

Boice-Crane began manufacturing woodworking machines for non-professional woodworkers in December 1926 when WB and JE Boice partnered with HG Crane. At the time of the merger, two companies were operating. HG Crane owned the Adrian company, and JE Boice owned the Toledo company.

The Boice-Crane company made light equipment for the average consumer with a few products designed to enter the industrial sector. Once the company failed in the 1980s, Wilton Corporation bought the press production and Comet Engineering Incorporated bought the radial arm production line. The Gothenburg Manufacturing Company took over the parts business and supported spindle sanders, belt sanders and scroll saws until their company was established.

The Boice-Crane 3500 table was produced in the late 1960s to early 1970s. It had a 1 1/2 horsepower motor that was 220V. The 10-inch blade is raised, lowered and tilted with controls located on the front of the steel cabinet. This cabinet type table saw was driven by a three belt system. The size of the table is 36 inches by 27.5 inches and can be extended to 63 inches with the extension table. It had a tattered iron fence and a flame guard.

After searching several websites that offer old manuals and repair parts lists, I was unable to find a specific manual for this particular table saw. However, the 3500 model had many of the same features as the 2500 series of earlier Boice-Crane table saws. The saw blade tilts with a rotating crank allowing the table to stay stationary. The dial indicates the height of the corner to provide an accurate way to measure your corner pieces. Hand grips lock the saw and fence in place to protect against pinching. The refrigerator is fully enclosed and oil-filled for longer wear. The large table is designed for larger loads than most other table saws. The guard tilts with the blade for added protection. Other safety features include a large splitter with two anti-kickback dogs to keep two pieces of wood from being thrown back. The separate motor in the steel cabinet reduces vibrations that can interfere with a good quality cut.

Because the Boice-Crane 3500 table saw is considered an older machine, it may not meet modern safety and quality standards. Those interested in restoring this vintage saw may have trouble finding suitable replacement parts because the companies that bought the different lines have also gone down.
