Wedding Invitations Primer – Wording Samples, Etiquette, Trends and Costs

The wedding invitation is the center of the wedding equipment, giving the first glimpse of the style and ceremony of the wedding. While save-the-dates are fun and cute, your invitations will be a true reflection of your event. Plan your wedding invitation well with our complete wedding invitation planning guide.

The Anatomy of a Wedding Invitation

Wedding invitations can include several invitations, depending on the nature of the wedding and your budget. (Of course, more coverage means more cost)

o Outer envelope: Keeps all envelopes, officially sent to recipient.

o Inner envelope: Keeps all the contents of the official invitation, third party for protection during shipping.

o Reception card: Specifying the place and time of the reception – usually not included unless the ceremony and reception are in different places.

o Answer card: where the guest tells you whether they agree or regret. In a self-addressed stamped envelope. Be sure to include an RSVP deadline.

o Maps/Guides: Optional inputs to help guests navigate and organize facilities

Price & Budget Ideas

Before you go shopping, know the printing process and invitation wording; this will help you identify your needs in advance and avoid unnecessary expenses. The price is determined per invitation, so if the guest list is large – be prepared to allocate a large part of the budget for the wedding invitation. Prices can range from $1-$50 each. High quality paper, colorful inks and unique graphics add value. Custom designs can also be expensive. Printing options also affect the price.

Invitation printing options:

o Engraving – the most formal and expensive method – results in a high-quality print that is pressed onto the back

o Thermography – more expensive than engraving – produces high-quality prints that do not stress the background

o Lithography – more expensive than engraving or thermography – produces prints that are not raised or pressed.

o Laser printing – the most expensive option. – produced with a laser printer and produces a print similar to that of lithography.

When estimating total costs, don’t forget to consider postage as part of the budget, including postage for reply card envelopes. Looking for ways to save? Keep your design simple, stick to one color. Use lighter paper and add less input. Use reply postcards instead of envelopes.

Trends

As with any other aspect of your wedding, your invitations give you the opportunity to reflect the colors, theme and/or season of your wedding. During spring, include pressed flowers or floral motifs that reflect the wedding colors. Asian-inspired floral motifs or 3D objects that add texture are hot right now. For autumn, include warm and colorful leaves. For a summer wedding, make shells and stars with ice blue or sun-orange / red. And for winter, add snowflakes to a simple white wash.

Other popular suggestions range from unique color combinations and patterns, to ribbons or other important items such as binding. Many couples are going back to traditional and formal designs and featuring initials as monograms on the cover, but even hotter are creative logos or historic family seals. Whatever you decide, make your invitations something new and unique in your own style.

Tips, Rules & Ethics

o When to send them – send wedding invitations 6-8 weeks before the big day. (if you think your guests need more notice, send a save the date card as well) Try to order invitations 3-4 months in advance to make sure they go out on time.

o How much to order – Order 25% more than the number of guests you invited – you have to make mistakes or make last minute additions.

o Consider hiring a calligrapher to enhance the beauty. (This is the first impression of your wedding!) Be sure to factor in the extra time to make sure your invitations go out on time. Many rules apply to the wording and pronunciation of invitations. Here are some of the basics to make sure yours is “pass-free”:

Etiquette in invitations

o Date and time to be written (half past four in the evening, not 4:30 in the evening, and the twenty-second of April, not April 22)

o Mr. and Mrs. are abbreviated and may be Jr., but the title should be written as Doctor.

o No punctuation is used, except after abbreviations and between cities and states.

o Wedding invitations only do not include RSVPs

o “Hosting” the wedding can mean anything from a set of parents helping to plan the event, inviting guests, or covering expenses:

If there is a set of hosts, list their names at the beginning.

If both parties are hosting, list the bride’s parents first on a separate line.

If you are hosting a group but want to include a group, please note their son/daughter’s name under their name.

If you are hosting your own wedding, start with the request line and the parents’ contact under your name.

If you and two sets of parents are hosting, list your name first followed by “with parents” before the request line.

Address Etiquette

o No abbreviations, except for Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Jr. States must be written as well.

o If one of your single guests is bringing a date that you know personally, send that person a separate invitation instead of putting “& Guest” on the inner envelope.

o If you cannot get a guest’s name – write on the inner envelope that they may bring a guest – NOT on the outer envelope. (that sounds weird)

o Unmarried couples who live together should receive an invitation, with their names listed in alphabetical order and their own line.

o Guests who are invited to live with roommates and not couples, should each receive their own invitation.

o List the names of children under 18 living at home on the inside of the envelope, not “& Family” which can be very vague and easy to interpret. Children over the age of 18 should receive their own invitations, regardless of their circumstances.

o Traditional couple recipients should follow this format:

Mr. & Mrs. Ryan Parker

2211 First Street, Apartment 3

San Diego, California 92109

Sample Wedding Invitation Wording

Gone are the days when wedding etiquette dictated that the bride’s parents, and only the bride’s parents, host the wedding. These days, anyone can foot the bill, and with modern family arrangements often anything but nuclear, there are no straightforward rules about invitations. We’ve sorted through the confusion to bring you word samples for the most common programs:

Simple, Traditional Style

[proper names of those hosting] (official host line) requests the honor of your presence (request line) at their wedding [relationship of the bride to the host] [bride’s first and middle names] the [groom’s full name]the [day of the week] the [day and month of wedding] in the [hour] in the [time of day] in the [name of wedding venue] in [city, state] Reception of the following

Divorced parents

[proper name of host] I request the honor of your presence at the wedding [his/her] [relationship of the bride to the host]

Or, if the parents remarry and host a new spouse:

[proper names of those hosting] I request the honor of your presence at the wedding [his/her] [relationship of the bride to the host]

Or, if the divorced parent is hosting:

[proper name of mother] SY [proper name of father] asking for the honor of your presence at their wedding [relationship of the bride to the host]

When the bride’s parents host Invitations are issued only in the name of the living parent:

mr. [Mrs.] Jonathan Stephen Smith and Timothy Wright request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their wives [her] daughter Elizabeth Ann

When hosting the Groom

The honor of your presence is requested for the marriage of Miss Ashley Johnson to Mr. Paul Wilkins

OR

Ms. Ashley Johnson and Mr. Paul Wilkins request the honor of your presence at their wedding

Another “Request Line” option

o “pleasure of your company”

o “the honor of your presence” (used instead of the official “honor” when there is no ceremony in the house of worship)

o “share and rejoice in their joy” other creative ideas that reflect the theme and tone of the wedding.
