In the age of celebrities impersonating Playboy just weeks after giving birth, and Christian Bale is yo-yo with his weight rumored to have gone from 215lbs to 125lbs and back again- it’s all for our viewing pleasure- it’s hard for the average person to master what’s normal and what’s not (If you don’t know, Bunnies and Batman are not normal). If you’re like me and have tried a thousand and one ways to lose weight, I like to think you’re normal. Losing weight is hard! Anyone who says it isn’t very good. To be good at weight loss, you must be a professional at putting on weight. It took me two years to gain a hundred pounds, a year to realize I was fat, and four years to lose it.
A year? Yes, a whole year. I wish someone had the gall to tell me I’m a behemoth. I played a lot of sports in high school, and I was pretty good. Being an athlete in great shape has many benefits, but it also has many side effects. The first side effect was that my head became bigger than my muscles! After high school I always ate like I was still exercising. My shirt and pants tightened as my frustration grew – so did my stomach. I thought, because of the protein I was eating, my muscles were growing. Little did I know they had turned into blubber. The other day, I noticed a strange line on my stomach (intestine). I feel like I don’t look like I did in high school anymore. These lines are major stretch marks. I remember it hit me and I really wanted to cry. I ruined myself.
I tried every possible food. If I could read about it, I would try it. Two things happened each time: I lost weight and then gained it back when I went off the crazy diet. I started exercising but couldn’t keep up with the routine. In fact, if I hold one, all I know is building muscle. I didn’t know how to burn fat. I have found a diet that works but I hate it. I had to eat like a bird. Darn it! I like to eat. The important thing is to find out how to lose weight while still living a normal life (eating delicious food and drinking). Four years and a hundred pounds later, I discovered how to lose weight.
1. Cardiovascular Exercise
No, I don’t mean running or anything strenuous like that. I hate running. I like movies and books. Find ways to incorporate your cardio into something you love. By cardio, I mean treadmill, step mill, rower, etc., not walking your own route around the mall (sorry pedestrians) and then getting a thousand calorie latte . For myself, at first, it read in the gym on some kind of equipment. Then, on the treadmill at home, at four speeds / four tilts while watching a movie or show. It didn’t feel like exercise until I thought about it and stared at the damn hour.
2. Weight training
You must lift weights to tone your body more when losing weight. Bare skin can be a little ugly – trust me. It doesn’t have to be heavy weight. Light weight, high repetition is good. This was especially difficult for me because I had never learned how to power train for sports like football and wrestling. Weight is especially important to help women avoid osteoporosis later in life.
3. Proper nutrition
The key to a healthy diet is not to eat food. Yes, there is a secret to the diet. DO NOT EAT! Have you ever heard of calorie counting? It’s amazing. Eat what you want – try to keep it under 2500 or 2000 calories if necessary for good results. The best part is, if you start your day with forty minutes of cardio and burn 500 calories, guess what? You can still eat 2500 calories and keep it under 2000. Tip: a delicious brownie with cool whipped cream is lower in calories than a chocolate bar at night.
4. Proper filling
For some people, simple food crushing will help. Down the line, when you’re about to reach your goal and you’re probably exhausted, burning fat or something along those lines might help. Just remember to be careful and do your due diligence, including asking your doctor.
5. Special training
This is very important! It can also be expensive. Then again, when you have diabetes, cancer and heart disease it can be expensive too. Oh yes- and they can kill you. If you need help putting out a fire, go to a firefighter. If you want to lose weight, go to a personal trainer. I know a trainer who can torture the biggest meat with little weight. Even if you’re only with a trainer for a short time, it’s important to be educated. If you knew how to get where you wanted to go physically, you wouldn’t be reading this list. Leave it to the professionals. If I need help with my taxes, I go to a CPA. The same applies to trainers.
These five keys should help you lose weight. Remember, it won’t be easy and it won’t happen overnight. It took me four years and I’m still struggling. Every time I get a new step, I get better. I have to overcome this stage many times to get to the next goal. Just stay positive and keep going. Sometimes you will fail. Remember, you are not alone. Everyone is fighting. Be strong and you will succeed.
