Radial Arm Saw Basics

The radial arm was first developed in 1922 by DeWalt and hit the market as the “DeWalt Wonder Worker.” So why is it so popular?

A radial arm saw is motorized like a circular saw and is mounted on a long arm with a yoke. This allows the saw to rotate at several levels. The motor is connected to the upper arm and all parts can be locked or left to turn. This saw gives the operator the satisfaction of an achievable cut.

DeWalt was first on the market and continued to do so until 1989 when the rights were sold to the American Saw Company. Sears has been making radial saws since 1958 and Delta joined the brand in 1948.

One of the reasons why this saw is so popular is because it is so versatile. Can rip, cut, and finish cutting rabbet and miter dado. Add the right attachment and it will work like a router or shaper.

The average size for the house is the 10 inch model while the industry usually buys the bigger saw. There’s nothing wrong with a 10-inch display.

It will cut 2 ¾ inches deep on a 90 degree angle, 2 ½ inches deep on a 45 degree bevel and in a cross cut up to 16 inches. A 16 inch saw will cut up to 29 inches on the cross and rip up to 41 inches on the outside.

It is always a good idea to follow some simple safety rules when using the chainsaw.

1. Wear a mask or safety glasses

2. Always wear protection that is designed for the frequency of the saw.

3. Keep your work area clean and free of obstructions.

4. Use a saw blade that is rated for your saw and the job you intend to do. Always refer to your manual.

5. Buy accessories designed for the saw. Do not attempt to repair others without the proper adapter.

6. Make sure the guard is on the saw before using it.

7. Always stand on the edge of the handle when making a cross cut and pull the cutting head with the hand closest to the handle.

8. Make sure your hands are away from the blade.

9. After each cut, return the cutting head to the back of the saw. The blade should not be able to move forward under its own weight.

10. When cutting wood, make sure it is not parallel to the direction of the wood blade.

11. Don’t cut loose hands. Always use the back directions.

12. Never leave your table unattended.

A radial arm saw is a great investment. This allows you to easily complete these projects. Whether you choose Black & Decker, DeWalt, Ryobi, Sears or one of the many other brands, you’ll be making a smart investment!
