Why Your Diet Didn’t Work

If you need to get hit on the head yet again with statistics on our country’s insanely high obesity rate or know how much stinky money it will cost you to be unhealthy for life, then turn on the news. If you need to be reminded how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, shop around. The news is flooded with stories.

We know the consequences of being out of shape. We know that being unhealthy will lead to illness, injury and emotional upheaval.

We know that being unhealthy will take years out of our lives.

If we know all this… Why don’t we do something about it? Why don’t we lose weight? Why don’t we start eating healthy? Why don’t we start training?

Another question is, why can’t we stick to our diets or New Year’s resolutions?

The answer to this burning question is this: because we start them with the mindset that they are temporary.

How often do you go on a diet and say to yourself: “I will eat this way for the rest of my life.” How often do you start an exercise program and tell yourself, “For the rest of my life, I’m going to the gym 5 days a week.”

Diets don’t work. Yes, lifestyle changes.

What if the company you work for changes its mission statement a month after you make it? Or did you only see 2 weeks ahead of them? Or did you stop scoring all together? Disaster, right? They would close their doors as many companies do right now.

When I bought my first business, a great mentor of mine told me to write down the following 5 success principles and stick to them. They will make or break a business.

1. Create a mission/vision statement

2. Set goals that lead you to your vision statement

3. Create procedures and operating systems

4. Seek wise advice

5. Surround yourself with other success-minded people

These same success principles apply to your health and fitness!

1. Create your long-term vision of yourself. (What to do

you look? How do you feel?)

2. Set small goals to achieve your ultimate vision. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals. For example: Each day, eat only 2,000 calories. Weekly – exercise 5 days/week. Monthly – lose 2 lbs/month.

3. Operating Procedures. This is the system that will take you to your ultimate vision. These procedures will become your new healthy habits. For example, you walk during your lunch break. Hit the gym straight from work.

4. Seek wise advice. This can be a personal trainer, nutritionist, book, magazine. Anything or anyone that can teach you about nutrition, fitness and health

5. Surround yourself with success-oriented people. Enter the right environment. Join a personal training studio, join a gym, take a new class. Anything for you to meet like-minded people with healthy lifestyles.
