The Weight Loss Study Witnessed by Millions

In April 2003, “Dateline” introduced six members of the class of ’78 at Quincy High in Massachusetts, looking to lose weight for their 25th reunion in the fall of 2003. Atkins, Weight Watchers, SlimFast, the six methods used by George Kruse, marathon training, and hypnosis. Here’s how they stack up:

Slimfast

Mark Giordani started using Slimfast to complain of being hungry all the time. And nothing seemed to satisfy him. “I’m back to the mindset that I’m hungry, I’m going to eat and I don’t really care.”

Despite expert intervention not available to most people, they couldn’t wait for the food challenge to end. To quote Mark: “I’m going to IHOP tomorrow and I’m getting the whole left side of the menu.”

Obviously, if it requires expert intervention, it is unlikely to work on its own. Also, buy plenty of specialty foods. Hardly a recipe for success if you try to live life normally.

Atkins

Atkins participant, Rick Burns, developed headaches, terrible constipation and a painful case of gout, which he believed was a result of the diet. With the help of top Atkins researchers, special “Atkins at home” meals and medical intervention, he gained 24 pounds. Enough said.

So, can this plan be called a lifestyle? Definitely not. Besides, expensive food had to be bought, so there had to be expert intervention.

Weight Watchers

Kathy Winters, doing Weight Watchers, refused to gain weight, but immediately went for deserts and chocolates after meals. To quote her: “Desserts and chocolates. I have them, I want them and I have them.”

And she started gaining weight. Despite expert help, this happened twice.

The fact that this woman has used this program before is very important. Since she weighed more when starting the program this time than before, it was clear that doing it in the past had not created any worthwhile changes in her metabolic lifestyle. Also, again expert ‘supervision’ was required. Can you imagine what happens after the monitoring is stopped?

George Cruise

Eleanor Talbot, George Cruise did the show. After the problems, Dateline organized a weekend retreat to help Eleanor and got an intervention from the programs founder.

Later, she had to return for more support in dealing with emotional issues. Most people don’t have access to this extra support. And it didn’t really help her.

Again, she needed constant, expensive personal support. Note the need to address emotional issues, which, while often necessary, are often neglected during weight loss.

Marathon training

Lynn Frank tried marathon training. She stuck to 1300 a day. She was trained by leading experts. But the progress was unsatisfactory. So Lynn sought expert intervention from a nutritionist and exercise physiologist. She lost weight, but with a lot of pain and injury, and required a lot of training.

Honestly, this training cannot be considered a lifestyle.

Keep in mind that all of the above participants have expert intervention that is not available to most. This shows that it is unlikely to work “out of the box”. Expensive, special food had to be bought. Despite all the extra support the results weren’t great.

Hypnosis

Mark Merlis tried hypnosis. He was perhaps the toughest case – a pastry chef with cravings and a tough schedule. After just three months Mark lost more than any other participant – an incredible 40 pounds.

Hypnosis inspired Mark to work passionately with a fitness trainer and eat right and with natural control.

Then his wife became active. She went to a hypnotist to quit smoking. And guess what? Smoke free, and fat free.

It is interesting that using hypnosis, Mark does not suffer. He was happy. Changes happened naturally. Not to mention other positive benefits and feelings. And he established a true and realistic lifestyle.

In short, losing weight successfully is not about dieting, but rather about adopting a sensible lifestyle. Hypnosis facilitates this admirably. Instead of a quick fix, it aims for long-term results. Another notable finding was that hypnosis could help other participants with problems they had with emotions, willpower, self-discipline, and enthusiasm.

Study after study shows that hypnosis is a very successful and affordable method for weight loss, along with many other behavior changes. Hypnosis can truly be the light at the end of the tunnel for many who have failed with other methods or simply given up hope.
