Most people are surprised when I tell them that thinking about food can make you stop wanting to eat it. That is not their usual experience. Usually, thinking about it makes them want it more. However, one should think about food in the right way. You should feel it with all your senses. You think about what it looks like, how it smells, what it tastes like, and what it feels like to eat it.
Doing this will help you tap into your memories of eating that food. It releases chemicals into your body that are normally released when you enjoy eating something so you feel satisfied. This means that you are more likely to eat less of that food if you have the chance to do so or that the craving may go away completely.
If you want to try this yourself, sit somewhere quiet and think about your favorite food. Close your eyes and imagine eating it and think about all the sensations you feel as you eat it. If you find it difficult at first, then eat a few mouthfuls so that you have something to refer to. Then imagine about 5 minutes more to eat it. I know it sounds weird but if you’re trying to resist tempting snacks, give this a try because it can really change the way you feel about weight loss.
Using this technique removes any feelings of deprivation. In fact, you can naturally eat less of other foods if you use the same thought process as when you eat real food.
If you watch TV, check your social media, or are distracted by something else while you eat, you won’t get the full value of that food. People eat less when they focus on what they are eating because they are aware of the physical signals of fullness and get the satisfaction of experiencing each mouthful instead of simply eating without taste.
So, focus on what you’re eating when you’re eating real food and imagine eating when the sugar cravings hit and you want to be satisfied.
