I’ve spent years studying French women and other naturally slim people, and there is a method to their “slimness,” but it’s probably not what you think. It does not include dieting and deprivation. It’s an attitude, a personal style, a way of looking at the world, and it starts from within.
While diet programs and other methods focus you on your “weight problem,” the French approach to living a slim lifestyle is probably the opposite of what you’ve been taught.
From the countryside of Provence to the bistros of Paris, I have paid close attention to the attitudes and behaviors of slim, chic and intelligent women. Their approach to food, weight and life is different from the “no pain, no gain” mentality of American culture. Instead, their mindset is rooted in happiness and personal style, both of which are wonderful tools for weight loss.
I realized a long time ago that if I wanted to be a slim, chic and smart woman, I needed to move away from dieting and towards a culture that has been living a slim lifestyle since before our country even existed. I’ve discovered that there are some things I never hear a slim, chic and savvy woman say. In today’s article, I want to share a few with you so you can begin to identify some of the blocks that are preventing you from having the body and life of your dreams.
“I’m on a diet.”
Diets don’t work. duration If they did, the over a billion dollar industry would not have continued to thrive despite its high failure rate. What on earth? What other business succeeds with a failure rate greater than ninety-five percent? Slim, chic and savvy women know that it’s not about going on another diet, but it’s the attitude and mindset that keeps them slim.
Foods = sadness. Who needs that? Definitely not a woman who values happiness, personal style and joie de vivre.
What does she do when she wants to lose a few pounds? Also, she has her secret tricks and techniques that bring her body back to its ideal weight without much drama.
“I read a great article about emotional eating.”
You’ll find a slim, chic, and intelligent woman reading a great article in Vogue, Bon Appetit, or maybe The New Yorker, but you won’t find her wasting time reading about some big problem she needs to fix.
Every time you read a diet book or article about overcoming emotional eating, you are confirming your belief that you have a problem.
Here’s the problem: focusing on the problem. What you focus on grows, so learning how to shift your focus to what you want is magical and very slimming. When you start following bliss, you put down the diet books and pick up the things you’ve been wanting to read for years or take that class you’ve been putting off until you lose weight.
You now start living your life the way you think you are, reading things that inspire you, not convincing you that you’re broke, because you’re not!
The result: weight loss.
I’ll be honest. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t occasionally think she sucks. I definitely do. However, a slim, chic and savvy woman does not wallow in her self-deprecating thoughts and she certainly does not say them out loud. She doesn’t feed it by focusing on it, looking for evidence of it, and living her life from a place of “I suck.”
Instead, she realizes that she is not her thoughts, that she has a wonderful life to create, and she immediately turns her attention to more beautiful and inspiring things. Sure, she does stupid things like anyone else, and yes, she probably has some cellulite or other bumps, lumps, and weirdness, but she sees this as a natural part of being a woman, but it’s not evidence that she’s unworthy.
She embraces her strengths and weaknesses and that alone makes her irresistible to those who are honored to be in her presence.
“I lost control.”
Even when she’s waist-deep in the fridge, the slim, chic and intelligent woman never says she’s out of control, because she realizes that every action she takes is entirely her own doing. You can’t feel in control if you’re constantly walking around thinking you’re not in control. So, if this is your belief, I challenge you to start saying “I am choosing to do this” before every action you take.
By repeating this to yourself, you begin to control your mind and a woman who is the CEO of her mind is unstoppable.
“I weigh ______.”
She’ll tell you what she cooked last night, where she went on vacation, and the designer of her dress, but she won’t discuss her weight with you. Many women are obsessed, talk and share their weight with the world, a slim, chic and intelligent woman does not dare to take her personal business to the street. Moreover, she does not focus on scale. You won’t find her sitting in some weekly weigh-in meeting. Oh paradox! Instead of focusing on the scale, notice how her clothes fit, how she feels in her own body, and how much joy she’s generating, not some number on a piece of metal.
If her clothes are tight, she will reevaluate her current lifestyle and choices and make the necessary adjustments to bring her back to her ideal weight.
No diet. No drama. Just tweaks and adjustments.

When she is hungry, the slim, chic and intelligent woman eats. She has programmed her body to expect lunchtime, usually breakfast, lunch and dinner at some point, with an occasional midday snack. As a result, her body’s metabolism runs like a machine, not storing, but releasing fat. She is not afraid of mild hunger. In fact, she experiences it several times a day right before her meal, which, in her opinion, adds a special sauce of pleasure to her next meal experience. You won’t find her skipping meals because she’s trying to lose weight. If she decides not to eat at lunch, it’s because she’s not hungry, not because she’s trying to lose weight.

As much as she starves, the slim, chic and intelligent woman rarely overeats and almost never stuffs herself. If she occasionally overeats (we’re all human), she immediately compensates by cutting back on her next meal.
They believe that life is best in the middle way of eating when hungry and stopping when elegantly satisfied. No dieting. No drama. Just tweaks and adjustments.
“I don’t have time to take care of myself.”
This is a lie, and a slim, chic and intelligent woman knows it. If you take time to do what’s important to you, and you’re not taking care of yourself, it’s because you’re not seen as a priority.
Every French woman I’ve met understands the importance of taking care of herself. This makes her a good mother, wife, lover, friend and woman. From cooking to taking care of her skin, she understands that a quality life requires time and space for her own nourishment. If it means a little extra time to relax, breathe and enjoy her own life, she’ll say no within a minute of a shower to anything that doesn’t excite her.
