Stop Being an Emotional Eater and Lose Weight Quickly?

Eating is a big part of our way of life. We eat when we celebrate a special occasion. When we entertain, have dinner parties or holiday gatherings, we eat. There are religious and other social functions in which what is on the menu plays an important role. Preparing food for someone else is a sign of friendship and love. Sharing a meal together can do a lot to enhance relationships. Food is an integral part of every life; It is one of our basic needs. So it is not surprising that it can become more than a necessary part of life, it becomes an important part of our lives. Times in our lives that call for us to eat big meals along with major events in our lives call for us to lose weight fast so we can feel better about other events. Like summer time swimsuits, wedding dresses, class reunions, vacations or activities we want to do.

What is emotional eating?

Sometimes though, food can be used as an emotional crutch. People who eat when they are lonely, sad, depressed, angry, bored or anxious rely on food to overcome their problems. It is emotional food. Emotional eaters are similar to addicts who use food to get away from real problems that cause negative emotions. Once they consume a large bag of potato chips and a 2-liter soft drink, they experience another negative emotion: guilt. Feeling guilty makes you eat a little more. They take steps to undo what they’ve done by overeating, such as purging, excessive exercise, and restrictive diets. Once negative emotions return, emotional eaters tend to indulge again. The vicious cycle continues. This type of behavior poses a serious threat to emotional health, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle and fitness.

Emotional eaters have a distorted relationship with food. Their self-worth is based on how well they stick to their ideal diet or how well they refuse “bad” foods. It can lead to depression and binge eating disorder and bulimia.

Am I really an emotional eater?

Emotional eaters have the following characteristics:

  • They eat when they are not hungry
  • They think about food all the time – about eating it or forbidding it
  • They try new foods regularly
  • When the diet fails, they feel guilty and fall back on the diet
  • They try to purge the food they have eaten by vomiting or using laxatives
  • When they eat more they exercise compulsively

How can I stop emotional eating?

The root of emotional eating is found in how food is viewed. If food helps you cope with stress and emotional setbacks, going on a diet is not the answer. If the diet fails, the feeling of guilt makes them overeat to cope with the stress. The cycle begins again.

Emotional eaters need to completely let go of their focus on food and diet and start learning other ways to cope with stress and difficult times. They may need a personal trainer or psychotherapist who is equipped to deal with emotional eaters. Once a person finds healthy substitutes for emotional eating, they can form better eating habits and lead a healthier lifestyle.

It can be difficult to get to the point where food no longer controls your life but is essential to your health. Then you need to find a good healthy diet so that you can start losing the weight you have accumulated over the years. A good exercise program along with a good healthy diet is essential and will help you lose weight quickly. Exercise should include both aerobic and strength training to really help with healthy and fairly quick weight loss. You want to lose fat but not muscle, once we hit our mid-twenties we start losing muscle, which causes our metabolisms to slow down.

If you do more than just feed your body, it’s important that you pay attention to why you’re eating. Once you can determine the cause and extent of retraining needed to defeat emotional eating habits, you can begin to lose weight and quickly regain your life.
