How Do You Know When You’re Eating Enough?

I see this all the time, especially in my female clients. Our logical, rational minds say, “If I don’t eat more, I must lose weight.” That is not true. Our bodies are amazing survivors, and if you’re taking in too few calories, your body goes into starvation mode. In that order, your body’s metabolism is in low, low, low gear. Everything you take into your body, your body hangs on for dear life. It doesn’t give up anything stored, because it’s got the message that “I don’t know when I’m going to get more nutrition, so when I get it I’ll hang on to what I’ve got.” I know it is very difficult to understand from a logical, rational point of view. You’re thinking, “I’m only taking in 1000 calories; how can I not lose weight?” Well, that’s why. If you don’t take in enough calories your body won’t allow you to lose weight.

So, what are enough calories? For the most part, if you’re taking in somewhere between 1800 and 2300 calories per day, you’re in the ballpark. If you’re a really short, short-placed person, you might want to take somewhere between 1300 and 1800, but that might be too short and too small a person. An average person out there needs 1800 to 2300 calories per day. To a dieter, it may seem like a huge amount of food, but it’s not if it’s the right food and healthy food. The choices you make mean everything. I’m going to take you through a typical day of giving your body the best nutrition possible.

breakfast You wake up, and the first thing you’re going to do is drink a 10-ounce glass of water, because you’ve slept anywhere from 7 to 10 hours and your body is dehydrated. So, drink a nice big glass of water first thing when you wake up. When you’re ready for breakfast, somewhere between 6 and 8 in the morning, you need to have protein, a good complex carbohydrate, and some healthy fats. So, a typical breakfast I recommend is cantaloupe, chopped, a cup of low-fat cottage cheese and 2 tablespoons of plain vanilla yogurt mixed in a bowl. Both your cottage cheese and your yogurt are excellent sources of protein. Beetroot contains some of the best complex carbohydrates, and you’ll get decent fat with your low-fat cottage cheese and full-fat yogurt.

A mid-morning snack. Around 9:30 to 10:00 in the morning, you want to eat breakfast. Maybe some fat-free yogurt, a handful of almonds, maybe a mozzarella cheese stick or a small box of fruit slices. These are all good options.

lunch Your midday meal should consist of plenty of vegetables, be it a nice mixed green salad or some steamed vegetables or raw vegetables. Then, your protein, tuna, chicken or some lean protein. It is recommended that you have 3 to 5 ounces of protein at meals. Again, you’ll want to have another large glass of water, and if you can do that it’s a good idea to have another with your mid-afternoon snack or throughout the morning.

Afternoon snack. Around 3:30 or 4:00, you want to have fruit, carrot sticks, another mozzarella cheese stick, that gives you a good energy boost. Low fat and complex carbohydrates or protein are good choices.

lunch Again, you want to have loads of vegetables, a couple cups of vegetables and 4-6 ounces of lean protein. Also, here you may want to have a very hearty whole grain bread or half a sweet potato, a small serving of brown rice. Another large glass of water is recommended.

Evening snack. You can have a snack before bed, but I make it light. A better option is a 6-ounce can of skim milk.

If you’re on a diet, you’ll hear the meal plan for the day and think, “That’s just a bunch of food.” But, if you commit to eating like that for 2 weeks, your body will get the message that more food is coming. Your body is fed every 2-3 hours, so suddenly, and before 2 weeks, your body starts to release stored fat, you start losing weight. I’ve seen this a lot, where people don’t eat as much food as the body needs, leaving it to accumulate.

Another issue is the amount of fiber you’re getting in your diet. It is very important that you have 8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as well as whole grains. These are very important to slow down digestion and help your body absorb the nutrients it needs from your food. Without enough fiber, your food will pass through you quickly, leaving you feeling like you’re always craving something else. Typically, these cravings lead to overeating of things that are not good choices.

If you commit to eating this way for a couple of weeks, you are going to see an amazing change in your body. It starts to release the stored fat and you start to break out.

Now, this is, of course, combined with an exercise program of at least 180 minutes of cardio and at least 2 hours of weight training a week. The more the better. You can overdo it in your weight training and you definitely want to rest a day between your weight training sessions. You can do your cardio work every day if you want. I recommend a day or two off per week.

Between eating enough and especially your cardio exercise, your cardio exercise is your aerobic activity that burns fat and plenty of water, you will definitely see your body release stored fat.
