Binge Eating Help – Be True To Yourself, Eat Naturally All the Time

I had a wonderful week at camp with my youngest boy and 57 other Year 6 children plus 12 parents/teachers. We had a wonderful time and I took the opportunity to observe how everyone was eating. This, along with many people, is quite indicative of how most of us eat when we are in a group situation where the choice of when and what we eat is not available to us.

The food was very tasty. There was a good selection between healthy nutritious food and treat type items. Food was available 6 times a day and everyone agreed that it was great. However, it is definitely designed more for kids, with options like nachos, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizzas, etc. As for the adults there was only one meal of corned beef, vegetables and mustard sauce that could really be classified as an “adult type” meal. However it’s okay as there are always plenty of salads and vegetables available and all the food is homemade and delicious.

However, it is interesting how much food most people eat. Seconds were always available and the main meal was followed immediately with pudding. More than half of the children/adults regularly went back for seconds. I’d say most people always had pudding. I could tell by the look on his face that he was sick after eating so much in one go. However he did it every night, probably for these reasons:

  1. The food was delicious and they wanted more whether they were full or not.
  2. He did not want to miss the pudding, as it was only available once.
  3. Most people were getting seconds/pudding and they didn’t want to be different.
  4. They were given more food and were obliged to eat it.

These are all very common situations, but if we are no longer hungry then extra food will not satisfy us. We only end up feeling uncomfortable and ultimately guilty because we ate too much.

How I faced the same situation. Although we could choose the food we wanted at each meal, the portion sizes were large.

  1. I only ate until I was satisfied, which was somewhere between half and three quarters of the dish. The rest went in scraps to the pigs.
  2. I didn’t go up for seconds, because I was already satisfied.
  3. I never had pudding straight after dinner. I went up and got it and then put it aside. I had it once for morning tea the next day, another time for supper time.
  4. I didn’t feel stuffed or uncomfortable, nor did I feel deprived.

Although I was in a different situation as to when and what I ate, I was able to control how I ate it. It meant I was still able to eat naturally, be true to myself and only eat the foods my body needed. Eating naturally here is so amazing, you can do it anywhere, simply listen to your own body like you do at home.
