Anorexia and Bulimia – the Most Common Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are a common problem in modern society. Mostly women suffer from eating disorders but many men also suffer from them.
Having an eating disorder is more than being on a strict diet, carefully counting calories and exercising daily to lose weight. An eating disorder is a disease that seriously affects the life of the patient and his family members.
People with eating disorders are trying to control their emotions and their lives by eating or not eating, which depends on each person with an eating disorder.
Two major eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia. Both diseases make their victims obsessed with the fact that they must do everything in their power not to get fat. They think they control their actions and lives as long as they are thin.
People with bulimia eat large amounts of food in a short period of time and then make themselves throw up, or they take large amounts of laxatives to get rid of all the food they have eaten as quickly as possible.
Bulimia patients do a lot of physical exercises and eat very little until they can’t bear the hunger and eat as much as they can. When they know they have eaten enough food they will immediately take action to eliminate it.
The causes of bulimia are psychological and may be related to stress, culture or family.
Symptoms of bulimia include:
The patient takes extreme measures to lose excess weight, exercising all the time even if he/she is injured or very tired.
Frequent urination or throwing up laxatives or taking pills
If bulimia is not diagnosed and treated by a specialist doctor, it can seriously endanger the patient’s health. It can cause depression, anxiety, cavities, fatigue, weakness, ulcers, low blood pressure and many more.
People with anorexia are obsessed with losing weight and have a distorted image of their own body. Although thin as a stick, they think they are fat.
They talk about diet and exercise all the time and they don’t eat. If you feed them they will refuse. They may eventually starve to death if they refuse to eat for long periods of time.
As in the case of bulimia, anorexics talk all the time about losing weight and they always exercise and keep a strict diet.
Anorexia can lead to low blood pressure, weakened bones and immune system, kidney stones, depression, loss of menstrual cycle in women and impotence in men and many more serious health problems.
People with anorexia or bulimia should get help as soon as possible before they seriously harm themselves. They deny that they have a problem, so talking to them doesn’t help. He should be helped by a specialist doctor.
