A New Ayurvedic Herb for Diabetes?
In February 2008 in the medical journal Diabetes treatment there is a report on a clinical trial of a “new” Ayurvedic herb for type-2 diabetes, Coccinia cordifolia.
It is also called koval or gourd ivy, this herb is in the same plant family as the more familiar bitter melon. Koval is a common plant in India and Bangladesh that grows in the Indian subcontinent like kudzu grows in the southern part of the United States.
Koval grows huge tubers that put them in the ground and then spread vines in all directions. Unlike kudzu, it bears white trumpet-shaped flowers that produce zucchini-shaped but purplish-red fruits. Ayurvedic medicine has used the fruit and leaves for centuries to treat diabetes, but this study is the first detailed clinical trial.
Since Ayurvedic doctors usually recommend “handfuls” of dried leaves and chopped pumpkin in tea, researchers at the National Academy of Health Sciences in St. They then gave the extract or a placebo to 60 newly diagnosed type-2 diabetics for 60 days.
If you know how most of the drugs for diabetes work (many of them promote weight gain), you will be surprised to see that people who took the herb did not the fact that it did not increase, but there was a slight trend in weight. weight loss (less than 0.1 kilo, or a quarter of a kilo, per month). There was also a small trend for thinner waists and tighter waists (again, a few millimeters, or tenths of an inch), with no change in food intake or total calories. However, the percentage of body fat increased slightly.
And as you’ve read in other natural health headlines, Ayurvedic herbs actually lower blood sugar.
At the beginning of the study, the average fasting blood sugar in the test group was 132 mg/dl, and the average post-prandial (after eating) sugar was 183 mg/dl. Mr.
The effects of the herb gradually increased over the course of 90 days. At the end of the third month of the clinical trial, the average fasting glucose among the diabetics who received the herb dropped to 111 mg/dl, while the diabetics who did not receive the herb then morning glucose levels are slightly higher. In the group of diabetics given the herb, the post-prandial blood sugar (after eating) dropped below 150 mg/dl. The improvement in blood sugar levels was confirmed by a 0.6 percent reduction in HbA1C.
The researchers noted that the percentage of diabetics receiving the herb (94 percent) and diabetics receiving the placebo (93 percent) were able to stick to their diabetes diet. The difference in blood sugar is due to vegetables. It is also important to note that the diabetics who ate the vegetables were not taking any of the common diabetes medications in North America, Australia, New Zealand, or the UK, and they did not have blood sugar levels that required the use of rapid insulin.
So what Coccinia cordifolia work?
Researchers don’t know for sure, but it seems that there are chemicals in the herb that are insulin-mimetic. That is, this as-yet-unidentified compound works like insulin in removing glucose from the bloodstream, but it doesn’t work like insulin in moving triglycerides into hungry fat cells.
Is koval extract for type 2 diabetes coming soon to a natural health product retailer near you? Just ask your Ayurvedic herbal specialist or wherever Gencinia is sold. It already exists. If you take the herb, 15 g (about half an ounce) per day will make a tea, drink hot after brewing in a closed pot for 15 minutes. If you use 15:1 dry oil, use 1,000 mg (1 g) per day.
If you have mild type-2 diabetes and are taking your blood sugar every day and avoiding carbohydrates, then this herb is definitely worth a try.
