How To Use NLP To Motivate Yourself To Run A Marathon

My brother and I recently completed a 20 mile run in Bramley town center between Reading and Basingstoke.

We finished the race before the time we requested in training, and were happy with the result.

I posted the results on Facebook and shared a picture of my brother and I in our matching running clothes and was amazed at how many people commented and emailed me about how they wanted to run the distance. more and lack of motivation. I promised to write and share my personal motivation strategies.

Basically, when training on my own, I do a lot of things that motivate me at the time, including changing my route, running with motivational music on my ipod, having goals. (like a 10k, a marathon or a marathon) to work out, and my skin feels like it’s enjoying the health benefits of maintenance and shape. Although running with others and having someone to run with is one of the best ways to stay motivated and accountable, running with others isn’t always possible, so you need to be motivated. we are a lot of ourselves.

But that’s not what people want to hear from me. They want a mental process and so I’m going to share what I use most to keep me motivated and motivated, including mental reviews and thoughts.

For most people, the main reason for mental recovery is to prepare yourself, using your thoughts in a way that ensures your behavior, your actions and your response to the situation. one in the future. However, I also find the awareness and memory of my mental review when I train or destroy an activity, motivates me even more when my legs are crying out for me to stop!

This type of motivational process, when done energetically and convincingly, should motivate and inspire you and push you forward with real energy toward the results you want.

it is your inspiration and motivation that helps you get through the dark, lonely, winter mornings and evenings of running alone, in my own situation.

Many people struggle to get out of bed early, or go for a run after a day at work and we often end up in conflict, as Aristotle said:

Needs are contradictory, which occurs when the concepts of reason and desire are in conflict and can only be done by people with a sense of time, because although reason dictates us because of the future, desire is influenced by the truth. at hand: a pleasant thing that is at hand shows itself to be pleasant and good, without any conditions, due to the lack of foresight of things far in time..”

So, when you enjoy the comfort of sleep and warmth, curled up in bed in the morning with your loved one, that instant pleasure and comfort that seems irresistible and instead of looking at the possibility of going out, running and healthy, fit and free, you think the prospect of running is cold, dark and unpleasant. The long-term end result is unconvincing compared to the current comfort and joy.

One way that NLP training from Robert Dilts that I enjoyed several years ago helped me is to use the “as if” system. It’s something I’ve written about in depth here and something I teach in many of my trainings.

The “like” system helps us make long-term results and benefits more compelling and allows us to ‘experience’ how things will turn out once we get those results, and overcome the short-term pleasures that come from not doing that thing (For example, going out on those first runs when you’re low on health at first and the gains seem small).

The goal is to make us have hope within us and can start to be motivated and motivated.

Our own sense of motivation is often guided by our values; something important to us. I mean, everyone who thinks about going out for a run does it because on some level they think it’s important in some way – maybe to lose weight, to get fit, to be able to run to the bus, to play with children without being pooped. , or run a big race of some kind and accomplish something you consider important.

To determine your personal values, if you’re not sure why you think you’re doing something you want to become more of, ask yourself what motivates you. What inspires you, or drives you, or makes you want to go do that thing?

You may want to experience success, no matter how you interpret it. You may want the praise and recognition that comes from doing this. You may be looking for love and acceptance or you may simply want the satisfaction of setting results and achieving them – in the example of running (although it can be applied to most other areas of life) it is it can be a slimmer body, helping fit people. for doing activities for charity, being able to celebrate important goals in life or feeling good in general.

These are all examples of “values” that are the basis of motivating people to do something.

The most important thing is that if we connect our future plans and the results we want with these values, these results will be more convincing and we will be more inspired to try to achieve them. A simple sentence that Robert Dilts showed us in an exercise that I still use today is as follows:

_____________ (My goals) will help me achieve ___________ (My values) because _________ (Their relationship)

There are many ways in which our self-image affects us in terms of the results we want. So when we imagine (as in my previous example) that if we go out for a run it will be cold, painful, dark, unpleasant and talk to ourselves in a defeatist and gloomy way, it will not happen. this?

Think carefully about how you think when you think about taking the necessary actions to achieve that desired outcome. Because it affects your motivation.

When I see the London marathon on TV, it’s not just my own values and my own desires that make me want to be there running it with thousands of other people… He uses music that excites me. these, using full color, showing what is happening, conveying inspiring stories of people running against all odds, the words used by the runners, the voices used by the commentators and more come together. to build. a magical situation inside your head that made you look at it so inspired and driven.

Why not use it to our own advantage as well? Inside our heads? Behave like a broadcaster!

You can do this with this very basic motivational process I use, which I learned in my NLP training years ago, and although it’s simple, you can adapt it to get yourself really motivated:

First step: Imagine that you have achieved the result you want. products that match your values. Imagine how much fun and satisfaction you get from doing it. behave “as if” it is happening and mentally replay the scenario, then in that scenario it works well and is happy as a result.

See what you see, hear what you hear and enjoy the wonderful feeling of it.

Step Two: Be a sensational TV anchor now, set the stage in any way you can to get yourself really inspired. Add music, the voices of loved ones cheering you on and greeting you, imagine what you will say to yourself, add colors and pleasant things that make this inner expression more motivating and attractive.

Use encouraging language to encourage yourself, use the tone you would use to encourage another loved one. Use whatever you need to make it as emotional and inspiring as possible.

Third step: Now start connecting these thoughts and feelings to achieving your results and start thinking about all the actions you need to take to achieve them – so connect the journey (the training) with all these great feelings. make the training as fun as the results!

Imagine all the times you get out, cheer yourself up, enjoy the process and so on.

Fourth step: Do it several times whenever you have free time and keep it in your mind.

Fifth step: Use feeling, imagery and experience in this process whenever you need it. Let it help you get out of bed, let it help you reach for your running shoes, let it help you motivate yourself to run that extra mile and push you to stay healthy along the way.

This looks at the results, of course, we need to learn the behavior and the right actions that we should do to make it easier and healthier for us too. So make sure you get the right information and training schedule if you want to run a marathon, for example.

This step here today is just to keep you motivated, and it’s what I use to help me mark each new marathon event and training schedule each year. I hope you find it useful (especially runners).
