Men Control Hunger Better Than Women

Recent studies have shown that men control their hunger more than women, which goes a long way to explaining why women are more likely to eat for emotional reasons, and why men it will be easier to lose weight when eating.

During the examination, they saw and smelled the food, and even tasted their tongue with a cotton swab. Fresh hot food was introduced every four minutes during the 30-minute scan. The final barrier to eating is the question of hunger, appetite and alertness.

The second test session had the subjects fast again for 18 hours, and then they were offered a favorite food, as before.

Only this time the subjects were asked to do an exercise in which they didn’t mind the food… taking their mind off of it and other things.

During this scan, the subjects were told to “suppress their appetite and suppress the feeling of hunger.”

It worked for the men in the study, but not for the women.

Although some women are better than some men at suppressing food cravings, in general women’s brains showed more hunger activity after they tried to suppress their cravings.

“Even though the women said they were less hungry when they tried to suppress their response to food, their brains still fired in the areas that control the drive to eat,” Wang explained.

“In contrast, men’s brain activity decreased with self-reported hunger during the test when they were asked to maintain their hunger.”

More work is needed to directly test this idea. The study appears in the January 15 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In the meantime, to keep hunger in check, try to surround yourself with healthy, nutritious options – filling but low-calorie foods. Raw vegetables, whole grain crackers and fresh fruit are great examples. Even if you replace just one nutritious food with a healthy one, you are still doing better for yourself and your body.
