Is NutriSystem Safe? I’ll Tell You

I get a lot of questions from people asking me if NutriSystem is really healthy or if it is “dangerous” to eat. I think sometimes people see the extreme weight loss of celebrities like Jillian Barberie and Marie Osmond and think it must be some kind of low calorie diet or starvation. It really isn’t. It does not require a prescription or a doctor’s advice (although common sense should clearly be used.) I will explain why I believe NutriSystem is very safe in the next article.

I believe you are getting enough calories with NutriSystem:First of all, this is not a very restrictive diet, in terms of calories. This one does not fall into the category of 800 calories or less which usually requires you to check with your doctor. The typical calorie intake for this diet is between 1,000 and 1,200 per day, which is typical of most “diets” today.

Why I believe that the process of ketosis with NutriSystem is also safe:This food works like a low carb or “glycemic friendly” food. You limit the ratio of carbs to protein. You eat more “good” carbs and eat more protein. This puts your body into ketosis which means your body starts feeding on fat instead of carbs. When it comes to weight loss, this is a very good thing. But, there is always a debate about whether ketosis is safe or not. There are many studies on this and two in particular indicated that ketosis was not only safe, but improved heart health, muscle mass and insulin levels. (The two studies I’m talking about are called “Ketogenic diet positively affects serum biomarkers of cardiovascular disease in normal weight men”, and “Association of Body and Hormonal Responses to a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet,” respectively.)

However, it does not hurt to ask your doctor if you are not sure or if there are changes in your body that are bothering you. In my experience, this state of ketosis is relatively mild and not a concern, but as I said before, you should always use your own common sense.

NutriSystem Nutrition: Sometimes people write to me and say that they don’t buy NutriSystem because they don’t believe that a diet where you can eat pizza, burgers, fajitas, and cookies can work. Well, what they don’t understand is that these foods are not the usual comfort food that you make at home if you are not worried about your weight.

Of course, they have been modified to be lower in calories and carbs and higher in protein. And they are all protected with vitamins and minerals. Most have about 20 – 30 percent of the daily value of food that your body needs. I know that in my case, sticking to this diet has really improved my diet because before I wasn’t adding fresh fruits and vegetables to every meal and I certainly wasn’t keeping my carb to protein ratio. It’s very difficult to make your own formula, in my experience. It is easier to let experts do the work and research.

Overall, my experience is that NutriSystem is very safe. I never felt sick or weak or weird. It has been around and has been researched and tested for a long time. They provide free tips and resources so you can get your questions or concerns answered. And of course, you should never hesitate to consult a doctor if you are concerned about your health.
