The Food Industry & the "Porkifying" of America

Obesity in America is an epidemic that threatens not only American quality of life, but American lives. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that about a third of Americans are obese, and 20 percent of us qualify as obese. For the last twenty years. the number of overweight has increased by 1 percent per year. Even worse, it affects young people. 15% of children between the ages of six and nineteen are obese, and 10% of those between two and five. John Foreyt of the Baylor College of Medicine warns: “It may be the first generation of children who will die before their parents.”

Like Coneheads, we think we are overweight and society prepares us for this acceptance of obesity. Seats in the new movie theater are about 20% wider. But the problem is more than computers and calorie consumption.

I lay the blame at the food processor’s door. These people are, simply put, crazy doctors. They bind our food with chemicals – mostly Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) – that make us brain addicts and trick our brain into believing we’re hungry, even though we’ve eaten a few hours before.

Adding to the problem is eating “fast” and processed foods, which are full of sugar, fat and trans-fatty acids. Another reason is that we live in an era of “super-sized” foods.

At some restaurants you can upgrade your meal for an extra 49 cents, meaning you get an order of fries and a soft drink you can drown. -debt, belly fat. Carl’s Jr. alone has enough burgers on its menu that the thought of them can make you drool. Snacks are inexpensive and combine flavors to make them more appealing. Vending machines offering high-fat, low-nutrition foods are being installed on middle and high schools across America. Like their cigarette brethren, food manufacturers also sell products known to cause disease and death. It is no longer necessary to ask what we can do for our government, but what is our government doing for us?

Sadly, few people eat vegetables and when they do, they are often cooked and rarely served. Yes, Americans are piling on the pounds and it’s all by design. Most dieters gain the same or greater weight within a year. Non-compliance is a bigger problem than most of us admit – including doctors.

Now is the time to think about our physical health. We need to make Physical Education a requirement for the first two years of high school, even if that means creating modified programs for overweight students. We should also start teaching about nutrition in primary schools. At the very least, we should have guidelines that advise children about the dangers of eating too much food. I know it’s hard to keep track of this at home, because some food habits are cultural and generational. Vending machines need to be removed from schools which only serve to fatten children and the wallets of unscrupulous distributors. Most importantly, parents need to be trained to lead by example.

In California, physical education is no longer required, but an elective. Kids get out of PE class faster than the gym teacher can yell, “Give it twenty!” These are the same kids who walk home as fast as their legs can go, jump on the sofa and play video games. Next to them are two hostess pies.
