10 Tips For Growing Tomatoes

Growing your own tomatoes is both fun and healthy. Keeping your plants organic by using only organic fertilizers and pesticides will bring good health to you and your entire family. Once you grow tomatoes and see the difference between what you get from your garden and the grocery store, you will never go back. Here are 10 important tips when growing tomatoes from seed.

  1. Do not hit the seeds When growing tomatoes from seed, you want to provide enough space for the branches. With many plants placed too close together will stunt growth. As the seeds develop and the first leaves emerge, transplant each plant into a 4-inch pot. You will do this in about two weeks.
  2. Light-loving tomatoes If you’re growing your plants indoors, you’ll want to use grow lights. Plants need 12 to 14 hours of light per day. Place the grow lights about 2 to 3 inches above the plant. Tomatoes love light so you want to plant them in the sunniest part of your garden.
  3. Cool Breeze is nice Tomatoes like to rotate in the wind. When growing it indoors, it is good to apply water twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps promote strong stems.
  4. Tomato loves the heatWhen preparing to plant the seedlings in the tropical garden is the best way. You can place black plastic or grass mulch over the area before planting. It will heat the earth. You should do this 1 or 2 weeks before planting. This warm land will promote early production.
  5. They are deeply planted
When you plant tomatoes, plant them deep. They are planted until the first leaf. Tomatoes will grow roots right from the stem and this will provide a good root system for the plant. You can also dig a small trench and place the plants on the side. Don’t worry, the plant will grow towards the sun and come straight out. I like to use tomato cages to support my plants as they grow. It is best to place the cage in the ground first so that the healthy stems are not punctured.
  6. Mulch is good Placing Mulch around the plants is good because it protects the soil borne diseases from spreading through the stems. Mulch also retains water and helps conserve water. Because tomatoes like warm soil mulch can make the soil cooler, so it is better to use black rubber mulch for warm plants like tomatoes. Since I only grow organic tomatoes, I do not use mulch or only organic materials for mulch.
  7. Remove the lower leaves Once the plant grows to about 3 inches tall, remove all leaves from the stem to within 1 inch of the ground. This will help prevent the fungus at the base of the plant. Misting your plants weekly with compost tea seems to be effective in preventing fungal diseases.
  8. Prune/Pinch gives more tomatoes Attach and remove the dreamers that form at the ends of the two branches. A crotch joint is where a branch joins two separate stems or branches. They will not produce fruit and will take energy from the rest of the plant. But go easy on pruning the rest of the plant. You can thin out the leaves to allow the sun to reach the ripening fruit, but the leaves do photosynthesis and create the sugars that give tomatoes their flavor. So take it easy on these barbers.
  9. Timely irrigation Tomatoes love regular watering. You never want your plants to wilt before you water them. Timely watering is necessary. Water the plant deeply and regularly, especially when the plant is growing. If you miss watering, don’t water to compensate. This will cause root rot and eventually kill the plant. As the fruit begins to ripen, reducing the water will concentrate the sugar and give a sweeter tomato. But do not cut too much, otherwise the flowers and fruits will fall.
  10. Make them put tomatoes There are two types of tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate. The determinate tomato is a variety that grows to a mature size and ripens all its seeds in a short period of time, usually about 2 weeks. When this first fruit ripens, the plant begins to lose its vigor and no new fruit is produced. Certain types of tomatoes are often called “bush” tomatoes, because they do not increase in size during the growing season. In general, they are smaller than indeterminate tomatoes, and most of them grow up to 4-5 meters. It is not recommended to cut and remove the dreamers from certain tomatoes. Despite their size, it is still possible to raise or collect them, because the selected fruits can bring a lot of weight to the branches. Many paste or Roma tomatoes are specific varieties. Some others that have been developed for decision include: Celebrity, Mar-globe and Rutgers. Growing a variety of tomatoes makes good sense when you want to grow a lot of tomatoes at the same time, for example to make tomato sauce. Indeterminate tomatoes are vines that grow in length during the growing season. Also called “vining” tomatoes, indeterminate tomato varieties will continue to grow and set fruit until frost. Tomato growers rarely allow their plants to become vines. Indeterminate tomato plants require large storage or caging to support what can become heavy plants (6-10′). However, tomatoes can be easily grown as hanging vines. This eliminates the need for support, keeps the fruit off the ground and allows the plant to grow freely, allowing sunlight to reach throughout the plant. Most tomato varieties are indeterminate including most heirlooms and most cherry varieties. Other non-specific tomatoes include: ‘Beefsteak’, ‘Big Boy’ and ‘Brandy-wine’. Early production types such as, ‘Celebrity’ and ‘Early Girl’, are also not specified. However, because they mature early and die before the end of the season, they are called semi-determinate. Heirloom tomatoes are all indeterminate varieties and the plants grow so large and heavy that they can break the stake holding them up. You can get indeterminate tomatoes to bear fruit earlier by pinching the stem tips in early summer.

In short: Growing your own tomatoes is both easy and healthy. Start early in the season, follow these 10 simple steps and enjoy the best tomatoes you’ve ever eaten.
