How to Be Owned by an Irish Wolfhound

“But you are the offspring of a fierce warrior prince who plays tonight With my children by the fire.”

(Excerpt from Hound of the Heroes by William Dammarell)

One does not “own” an Irish Wolfhound, but “owns” an Irish Wolfhound. I currently “own” two, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are classics of their kind and are an endless source of entertainment and joy. Once you “own” a Wolfhound, you are infused with a special charm, and you will never be the same. But be careful! They are addictive! You can’t stop at just one!

I am a landlord, not a breeder – the thought came to me, but I had to bless – I will make a bad breeder – I will not be able to give even one of the “calves”! Not even money!

“I’ll give you a dog I got in Ireland. He’s big-limbed and has the same following as a man. However, he’s smart about people and will bark at your enemies and not at your friends.” .the countenance of all men, whether in sorrow or in favor of thee, they will lay down their lives for thee. (The Icelandic History of Njal; 970-1014 AD)

I am now an experienced Irish Wolfhound “mom”. I spent a lot of time and money on my “study”, but now my fur babies have trained me well. I don’t claim to be an expert on the Irish Wolfhound and I just want to share the wonder of owning one of these wonderful animals. You can laugh with me or laugh at me … Irish Wolfhound owners have no steps … we are well trained, you see!

If you are one of the hundred or so people who have stopped me on the street to walk across one of my dogs and ask me “where can I get one?”, you can consider what you will get. if you get one. So let me start from the beginning…

So you want to adopt an Irish Wolfhound!

Years ago, when my wife and I first saw “Chewbacca” (the “Wookie” who traveled the world with a young Harrison Ford in Star Wars), we looked at each other and said, ” I want one of those!” Alas, the Wookie is a mythical creature, and as far as we know, no one on earth has ever bred them.

Then one day we saw a picture of an Irish Wolfhound, standing facing the wind. The similarities are not surprising. “There’s our Wookie!” We cried together, and without any preparation, we quickly decided to build one. Ah, those were our innocent days!

The Irish Wolfhound is a noble animal; a gentle giant, whose main character is that of your typical “couch potato”. They love their comfort as much as you do. They make perfect nannies for your kids and have the patience of saints. However, owning such a large dog comes with a lot of responsibility, as well as a lot of fun – as we’re about to see.

First there was the added expense of having to trade our beloved Mercedes for a large four-wheeled wagon – to fit the dog. Then came the making of the sofa, although there is no more room for the sofa for us, me. just cover the torn areas with a blanket and hope for the best. The fence had to be reinforced, and I lost count of the number of times my husband changed the flywire on our front door. Our old country lawn (yes, it used to be lawn – not sure what you call it now), looks very rural. In fact, it is like a horse barn. As for my carpets and walls, well, let’s not go there, but don’t be upset if I never invite you into my house.

I love my giants, and what if they almost destroyed the garden, the carpet, the walls, the sofa, and nearly sent us into bankruptcy with food and vet bills – I can’t imagine life without them. those. They have many wonderful qualities that make me feel this way. They share all aspects of our lives, and there is nothing more than helping “mother” in her office at home, and “father” in the garden. In fact, we two Irishmen have been very busy this summer, helping Dad renovate the garden. I believe they are trying to build a swimming pool on one side of the house. It must be annoying them so when Dad fills them up again. They really play with our daughter too. He especially likes to sneak into his room at night and pick out a toy to play outside. They never damage the toy. I always find them in pristine condition, even if the experience is a bit wet and murky.

Our beginnings as Wolfhound parents began with the adoption of Wookie, a gray male. (What else were we expected to call her?) Our daughter was about two years old, so it felt like we had two children to take care of. Wookie is definitely a clown, and when he says he’s depressed, he means it mildly. Wookie was only six months old, so we realized that it would be difficult to share our little house with him. A Wookie’s tail could clear a table in a single swipe, and leaving food on the kitchen bench caused trouble. Unlike other dogs, which can only smell the delicious remains sitting on the canal and dream about it, Wolfhounds can see it, and reach it.

Shortly after Wookie arrived, we found a “rescue” dog. (Unfortunately, some people do not research the requirements for owning one of this breed, and realize later that they should have bought a small poodle.) Stands about 90cm (approx. 35 inches) at the shoulder and weighs 78. kilos, he was, and is now, visible. We thought he was about three years old, and we decided to celebrate his “birthday”, with chocolate cake, every St. Patrick. Wookie took a shine to him immediately, and even Guinny, as we decided to call him, sometimes saw him as a bit of a handful, he took a liking to him, and the two became firm friends.

Guinny, we found out, loves a good cup of coffee. Not the simple black stuff. He likes white with two sugars, and no, of course we don’t give our dogs coffee! We don’t need it. He helps himself. I always knew he was in my coffee by the spill on the cup, or if I didn’t see it (sometimes he cleans himself to hide the evidence), I knew he was there by the strange taste left in the cup.

The Irish Wolfhound is warm and affectionate with a sensitive and gentle personality. I don’t know if I would recommend them as guard dogs, although owners can be confident that if attacked, Wolfhounds will defend to the death. The size of these animals, with their deep and impressive skin, would scare off most thieves, but I don’t know if it would be suitable for my house. I just saw it now. There they were, standing on the fence, each with their favorite toy held tightly in their powerful jaws. My two protectors without fear of the house and the fire… “Don’t come in here, the teddy will catch you!”

Owning an Irish Wolfhound is an honor. Being accepted and loved by someone is truly a gift from God. My fur babies are an endless source of play and companionship, and I haven’t even begun to mess up my experience. (Speaking of searching… is that fleas?)
