The Mystique of the Double Rifle – Part Two

In the early 1980’s I started looking for a double action rifle in the right caliber for big game. In addition to the reliability of the amount of energy for the target, it must be of such a caliber that cartridges, credit cards and projectiles can be easily obtained. Buying 40 guns, for example, will increase the problem of getting ammunition and supplies.

I wanted to have my favorite rifle, the 30/06, but there are very few rifles made in this caliber. In addition, mining problems can be found in calibers without rims. Shortly after that I came across two 9.3 x 74R caliber rifles side by side. I knew about this cartridge and it made my decision to buy the gun a lot easier. It has a lot of energy for big games and elemental areas.

First of all, let me talk about the 9.3 x 74R caliber. In Europe they usually indicate caliber by the diameter of the projectile, the length of the cartridge case and then a suffix that indicates if the case is rimless. So this cartridge has a projectile 9.3 mm (.366) in diameter and 74 mm (3 inches) long. The “R” means that there is an edge on the cover of the cartridge for extraction. The case also has a small taper that helps with extraction. Extraction is always a concern with double-action rifles because the cartridge case does not rotate with the bolt for primary extraction. The case immediately pulls and comes out” This cartridge is widely used in Europe and now we hear more about it in the United States. In fact, some American companies now make the projectiles to return and others bring the bullets and guns. .

The gun was manufactured by the Richard Fischer Jr. company. in Suhl Germany Suhl (State of Thuringia) in Germany’s former arms manufacturing center and still produces fine firearms for those who love quality and beauty. The gun was proven in February 1931 and was therefore manufactured some time before that date.

When buying a double gun, you must check the information found in the “flats” Remove the barrel and put it back and look at the marks found on the housing directly under the room. The caliber will be stamped at this location, mine is stamped 9.3 mm/74.5. Stamped with N for nitro proofed or just plain nitro cellulose, smokeless powder. The weight of the projectile used to control the barrets weighs 18 grams which is about 285 grams. A 9.3 x 74R box produced by DWM in Germany features a 19 gram projectile with 3.85 grams of smokeless powder.

AU with the upper crown means the gun has the final proof. Proof marks were used on German rifles prior to 1939 when new proof laws were enacted. The stamp, st m G shows that the barrel is proven for a gun barrel with a steel projectile. AG with a crown on it means it was rifle proofed. E with the crown on top is stamped on the flat housing showing that the gun was proven for an express gun barrel. Finatty eagle with spread wings shows that evidence was made on the unfinished barrels. Of course, they didn’t go thinking about the final finish and just checking that the barrel has structural flaws.

To be sure of the meaning of the different proofs for the different countries involved in the manufacture of firearms, you must have a book on proof marks which is available and is listed at the end of this article.

The reasons I enjoy this gun when I hunt are many and varied. First of all, if I go back to the mountain, the gun will probably break into different parts. The rifle is also light compared to many bolt action rifles that are designed for large magnums. US caliber. When assembled for use, the gun is well balanced and easy to carry in difficult to reach locations. Due to the lack of a long action, as seen in bolt action rifles, the rifle can have a 26 inch barrel and be even shorter than comparable bolt action rifles. I also have a double barrel that is a heavy duty shotgun. The first barrel should do the job at hand, but if not, the second barrel is easily accessible by placing your finger on the second trigger. You don’t have to move the bolt or work like you do with American hunting rifles. Of course, one could argue that there are semi-auto hunting rifles that allow you to send multiple rounds down range by simply pulling the trigger. That’s true, but I’m not a proponent of “spray and pray” marksmanship. This is especially true when you consider the number of hunters who cross the hills and plains during the hunting season. People can be injured or killed by random shots after running away from pets. I feel that if the animal has not had a shot or two, it is time to stop shooting and find another opportunity to fill the deer or elk!

This particular double gun does not have an automatic ejector like most double cases. An automatic ejector will increase the price of the gun by a factor. Another is that in dangerous game it is felt that the ping of a cartridge box coming from a gun will attract the attention of a wounded and dangerous animal. If you reloaded the ammunition, it also allows you to put a bag of shot guns in your pocket instead of digging through the snow looking for them.

When this double is reversed, there is a trap door on the toe of the stern that houses four guns. This is that I always have spare bullets with you if needed, I’m not one to go into the woods with a box or two of bullets because I hunt and go looking for and destroying missions. If you can’t place your pet in half a dozen or less, then it’s time to spend more time in the area or be more selective when choosing your shot.

As I got older, I added 23/4X the width of the rails built between the barrels. This helps me to see the gun and also check the brush or trees to see if an animal is legal… before pulling the trigger. There’s no reason to put a 3 x 9 variable scope on a rifle like a double rifle at 100 to 150 yards. In addition, I hunt and chase the animal to reach a decent area which is part of the hunt.

Experience if I just wanted to put meat on the table, I used a heavy caliber sniper rifle and shot at targets from 500 to 1000 meters. That’s not my idea of hunting and I’ll stick to 100 to 150 yard shots. Remember, the thrill of hunting is summed up in the first four letters of the word hunting… WOOD!!

Finally we come to gun control. It was regulated in the gun industry, but with modern components, which create a new cartridge, it is necessary to find which ammunition or a large manufacturer that gives you the best results for your own gun. I fired the factory load, putting the bullet back in the original. It could be said that my experience with the 50 group ammo was like a trail of killer bees. In short, my experience with these has been bleak at best. The truth of this has not been seen since the Napoleonic Wars!!

The jacketed bullets gave good results for the medium. The powder charge, powder type and of course projectile weight and type need to be varied. The number of permutations and combinations can be overwhelming to say the least. After many shots, I came up with the winning combination. I use RWS and Norma 286 rifles with RWS in one barrel and Norma factory loading in the other. This gives good results; It’s very easy but it takes a long time to find that perfect combination.

As for reloading, I find that you don’t reload the case as many times as you do with a bolt action rifle. I use my case 3 times and then switch to a new case. Repeated use may cause a separation of the head which is not suitable.

When I hunt with reloaded ammunition I use virgin brass so I don’t have to worry about it in the field. I might add that when there is a split in the head I don’t need any more money than a cleaning rod with a 38 caliber brass brush. The tapered case, which helps with extraction, may remove the headless case!!

If you have never tried a double gun for hunting, I recommend you check it out. This is not a gun for the average “meat hunter” who goes into the woods to put meat on the table. It can be compared to fly fishing which is also for different types of anglers. If you want to fish, just grab a rod, reel and a worm. However, there are some of us who appreciate the best in rifles and shotguns to create the best experience in the field and on the river. When it comes to hunting, both guns can be the love of wood and metal for hunters and gun enthusiasts.
