Is Using a Live Model or a Photo Reference Best When Drawing Portraits?

Before the creation of photo artists, they always had their models to draw or paint their pictures. This practice is very deep in the tradition of drawing. Of course, after receiving a picture, the artist’s options for creating pictures were expanded. This includes the use of photography as a final tool, as well as a tool to help create a drawing or painting that does not have the model for the artist in the studio. Today, many artists choose to use a combination of these two methods when drawing. There are also artists who use only one form or another for various reasons. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages which will be discussed in this article.

Using a live model

Many artists will tell you that this is still the best way to create images. It certainly has the most value in terms of tradition. It has been tested over hundreds of years of practice. And in many ways, I think this is the most rewarding way. It is highly interactive, and the resulting images will capture the dynamics of the interaction between the model and the artist. There are intangible qualities that this approach provides that cannot be achieved using images. From a technical point of view, the values will be more accurate and the artist will see the subtle differences in shades and highlights that are sometimes lost in the picture. Of course, I’m not saying these tricks can’t be mastered by a professional photographer. However, most average photos lose these qualities to some extent. Similarly, smaller details can easily be lost in reference to images. Small details of jewelry, for example, may be visible in person, but or or and / or and / or in a photo. Again, photographers who use larger digital cameras or higher resolution digital cameras can get good detail. But, chances are, if you’re going for those goals to achieve that level of quality, you should probably use images as a last resort.

There are disadvantages to drawing from a live model. First, it takes more skill to take pictures of live models. You create a two-dimensional image from a three-dimensional image. With practice, both can be done with the same effort, but for beginners drawing from photos is an easy way to start. Also, the model must sit for a long time. No matter how hard a model tries to be, she will eventually change positions. The longer they sit, the worse these changes will become. Skilled artists can incorporate these differences into the drawing, but I’ve seen many new artists struggle with moving models. Another disadvantage of the direct model is the flexibility factor. A long time must be allocated (often more than once) to work on the image. These times must be coordinated between the artist and the tutor. When you’re just practicing it’s not a big deal, but if you’re trying to draw live, it reduces your flexibility in your working hours and it can be more difficult when you live in different places and your customer.

Using Photo References

While many artists prefer to use live models, others simply use photographs as the basis for their drawing. The advantages of using graphics are directly related to the disadvantages of using live models. Photography allows the artist to really analyze a person’s face (or facial features) without overwhelming the subject. While professional templates can be used in a class of art students who stare at them for hours straight, most map clients may feel overwhelmed by them. However, in order for the artist to get the correct interpretation, he must look closely. The drawing also allows the artist to make the subject without worrying about the change of location. And of course the topic doesn’t have to be there. This can be important to the subject and/or the artist.

The primary disadvantages of using image references are listed in the section above. The biggest problem I see with artists who only work with pictures is that the resulting pictures tend to be very flat and lifeless. This is not always true, and can also be overcome by an artist who has done many drawings from live models. But it is easy to analyze and “tough” when working with images. I wouldn’t recommend it as your only method. If you choose to do most of your drawing by reference, at least learn how to draw in a local drawing class with the occasional live model.

So what is the verdict?

My professional opinion is that sculptors should find ways to use both techniques. Many artists today will arrange to sit down with a tutor to take a live photo shoot. They will use the same chair to take a reference picture to use to finish the picture. It seems to work well for many people. This allows you to get the best of both methods.
