Moving Through Grief – What’s Normal?

Do you feel as if something is wrong with you because of how your loved one’s death has affected you? Are those around you telling you that you must “hold your own” or that you should “get over it”?

Don’t let them make you feel isolated because of their lack of understanding. Most people have preconceived notions about what is and isn’t human reaction to the death of a loved one. But the problem is (and their problem) only you know the level of emotional investment you had in the deceased loved one – not your friends or family.

Grieve on your schedule, not theirs. So what is normal that sometimes seems so unusual and can scare our supporters? The following are related to the grieving process over the years.

1. Let’s start by understanding that grief is a long and difficult journey with ups and downs, and unexpected twists and turns. No two people are alike, not even in the same family. The process is much longer than our culture teaches us. Most mourners are shocked and disbelieving at first, even when they know their loved one is going to die. It is not understood that the person is no longer physically present. You may be depressed, without emotions. Normal.

2. You may (or may not) be full of anger and/or resentment. Anger is often directed at doctors, sometimes at other family members, God, absent friends, clergy, funeral directors, or the deceased—or because of feelings of abandonment. Don’t expect your support network, however difficult, to understand your sadness or anger. You may even feel angry with yourself for what you did or didn’t do, real or imagined. Normal.

3. It is unusual to have various physical reactions, except crying or screaming. Indigestion, loss of appetite, headaches, fatigue, or the return of old pain. Shock or tremors, weight gain or weight loss have been reported. What we feel emotionally is often transferred to every cell in the body. All of this usually results in not being able to sleep.

4. You may feel empty, irritable, overwhelmed, confused, or insecure. Disorganized thinking, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, or confusion may occur. Fear of the future, loneliness or panic at times. It can be guilt, regret, or depression, as time passes, and a person repeats the various situations leading up to death. Emotional surges or waves of emotions are common.

5. As time passes, as the reality of the loss sinks in and early support begins to wane, the real work of grieving begins. Here you may feel lonely, isolated, longing, or having difficulty establishing new routines necessary in the absence of your loved one. Feelings of rejection, despair, or hopelessness may appear. This is also the time when good people wish you a speedy recovery and you need to follow your own grieving schedule.

Life is often questioned. What might that mean today? You may find no purpose in a world without someone you love, and the thought of ever feeling happy again is the craziest thing. You procrastinate, have difficulty making decisions, lack focus, and can be impatient with everyone. At this time it is necessary to start working on building a new relationship with the dead by learning to love in the midst of separation, starting to find meaning and try to restore life.

In short, you will undoubtedly find several answers to the death of your loved one. They have been experienced by millions of other people before you, in different forms. The most important thing is to let go of the grieving process. Try not to resist it. Let it play itself out. No one can tell you how long it will take.

And, you are not weak because you are still crying and mourning the dead. It is common to tear up at various times throughout the year when traumatic memories are present. It is healthy. Don’t forget to express normal emotions while you are grieving. Death changes us. We have to establish our own identity, and as we gradually heal, we regain joy and enter the next chapter of life.

Each of us decides whether to turn to loss or restoration throughout our lives. Above all, remember that there is nothing wrong with owning your feelings.
