The Basics of Losing Weight Part III – Water

Welcome to Will of Iron’s ongoing series “The Basics of Losing Weight”. Today we will focus on water. Water is one of the five essential nutrients. The human body consists of between 60% and 70% water, which includes your muscles. Of course, it’s very important to make sure we stay hydrated.

Now being in the US Army for the past six years may have given me a biased view of the importance of water. Because anyone who has been through ground combat training knows that any problem you have can be solved with more water. “Are you in pain? More water.” “Did you have a headache? More water.” “You just broke your leg? More water.” So it is clear that I have in mind that water is important.

This segways from my post last week about nutrients as well, but water is such an important part of weight loss for me that I want to give it its own post.

Water has very good benefits in getting enough.

One benefit of drinking water is simply staying hydrated. If you don’t drink enough water, you can become dehydrated. Some symptoms of dehydration are; muscle weakness, headache, dizziness. Some severe symptoms are; extreme thirst, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, fever, and in some severe cases delirium or unconsciousness. (source: mayoclinic.com)

Another benefit of drinking water is that you can replace sugary drinks with water and save calories. According to dailyplate.com a 20 oz coca cola bottle is the same; 240 calories, and 65 grams of carbs (almost all sugar) I personally know that when I drank pop I drank a lot of it throughout the day, maybe two or three bottles a day. So that’s about 720 extra calories a day! And you can cut them with drinking water.

This is kind of crazy. But one, I guess you could call it an indirect benefit of drinking water, is that if you get enough and have to get up to use the bathroom, those extra calories you burn by standing up and movement. I know it’s not a lot of money, but a little helps.

Now that we know that access to water can be a good thing, how do we know we have enough? There are two ways to know if you are getting enough. One is if you are thirsty, drink water. Simple isn’t it? Another way to tell is to check the color of your urine, the lighter it is the more hydrated you are.

According to http://www.healthierus.gov/dietaryguidelines, drinking when thirsty or with a meal should be adequate for the average person who does not participate in vigorous physical activity. .

And while the workouts will be another part of this series, hopefully we’ll get some intense physical activity throughout the week. An eight-ounce glass should be a good starting point for your daily water intake. This equates to sixty-four ounces or half a gallon of water per day. And as I said last week, it all depends on the individual. So some people need more and some need less.

And of course, before you start a weight loss plan, you should consult your doctor to make sure you are physically fit and if you have any allergies.
