We all know that weight gain in midlife is a very real and potentially scary experience. I am writing to tell you that if you don’t get enough healthy carbohydrates in your diet, you will gain weight and mess with your hormones throughout your life, but especially during menopause.
Healthy carbohydrates are a crucial part of your diet because they keep your mood up and provide you with much-needed energy, including muscle strength and brain activity. If you’re in a bad mood, feeling tired, and your brain has gone to mush, you may not be in menopause, you’re just starving with your ridiculous diet, or you’re in menopause and making your symptoms worse with your diet.
Complex (healthy) carbohydrates are converted into sugar in your body in much smaller quantities and at a more constant rate than bad carbohydrates. Therefore, your good carbs will cause you to produce less insulin. In other words, you’ll feel satisfied longer, be more energetic, and be in a better mood (your kids, coworkers, and significant other can thank me later) if you eat good carbs.
Good carbohydrates are high in fiber. The more fiber you eat, the more of your excess estrogen will leave your body through your digestive system. I can hear you say, “Don’t we love estrogen? I thought you said it was needed for 300 bodily functions.”
My answer is, “I’m talking about the excess estrogen you don’t want; the kind that causes belly fat and increases your risk of getting breast cancer.”
