The 5 Elements of Taoist (and Buddhist) Metaphysics, Taiji and Pakua have all established a well-established theoretical framework. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine (‘Huang Di Nei Jing) explains the practical applications that permeated and supported the Society and Culture he founded. Taiji and Yin Yang work on a basic level like Gender while Pakua works on the world of reality (eg 8). The 5 elements work at the level related to the human being, connecting the microcosm and the macrocosm through associations, for example, with the 5 major organs, body processes in inside, the 5 main conditions and the 5 Animals of Shaolin Kung. Fu according to the following matrix explains:
5 elements Link between human energy and human form
land: Solids; bones, fleshy teeth etc., as well as the spleen which controls the transport of waste (that is excrement) to go out and return to the earth and in 5 Animals are called Serpents.
Metal: Gas; respiration, digestion, flatulence etc.; also the lungs–all light but strong (the high power-to-weight ratio is characteristic of Metal) like the Leopard in the word 5 Animals.
Water: Water; (blood, semen, bile, saliva etc. and the kidneys that control the secretion of hormones in the bloodstream and urination and, in 5 Animal terms, the Crane.
Fire: energy; temperature, prayer and synaptic responses, bioelectricity, Qi etc., and the Heart which strengthens the body’s functions and makes us warm blooded. In the word 5 animals it means tiger.
Tree: Spirit: (fuel, source of motive power, source of living energy) obtained from eating grass, vegetables and fruits etc. or animals that do so. The Liver controls its extraction and delivery to the heart through the blood vessels it controls and is connected to the Dragon of the 5 Animals.
Spirit and Qi!
Qi is energy while spirit is fuel, while Gu Shen (Spirit Valley) from Shen Gu (Spirit Valley, between the hemispheres of our brain) is Intelligence. The body’s energy source, in this superstitious 5-element definition of the soul, is compiled from our food of the wood element (whether we eat grains, grasses, vegetables, etc. or animals that do this us). This causes an invisible physical movement through an internal ‘mysterious moving’ process within us!
Other well-known levels of connection include the Elemental Birth Year of all humans and each Animal (Calendar) Year (2011-12, for example, Yin Metal) and the placement and location of objects in through Feng Shui. The 5 elements in each case represent a set of ‘keys’ that enable balanced progress and improved performance in various areas if essential practice is involved.
