Up to 60,000,000 Homeless Cats

This is the estimated number of homeless cats roaming the United States today. Many pets are no longer loved by their owners and are thrown away. There are even more second, third or, if they can survive, fourth generation ‘wild’ or feral cats.

Estimates range from 4,000,000 to 14,000,000 cats euthanized in the United States each year. It breaks my heart, but what makes me so angry is people who throw away their unwanted children. Their actions are cruel and heartless, leaving cats and dogs helpless to fend for themselves in a harsh and dangerous environment.

And who pays for these shelters and kills all these cats? You do. Even if you are not responsible for the problem.

Most citizens would not dream of abandoning helpless animals. It is the few who have no doubt, or conscience, that cause this great problem.

Let’s talk about some numbers for a minute. Let’s put the number of homeless feral cats at 50,000,000. We will make 50% of them women farmers. That’s 25,000,000 cats that can give birth to two litters at an average of 5 per year. That is, 10 kittens per female cat per year, 25,000,000 females give birth. My calculations say that 250,000,000 more kittens are added to the environment every year. So if half of them are female and we have 10 kittens a year plus the 25,000,000 females we started with…… Unfortunately my calculator won’t go up much! In seven years, only ONE can produce 450,000 kittens.

This problem is huge. The damage to the environment and damage to wildlife and wildlife is staggering. Cats eat around 5% of their body weight each day. The diseases that these unfortunate animals transmit are innumerable to domestic animals.

So what can be done. Some states have Trap, Neuter, Return programs. It does what it says. They trap the small cats, remove them and then return them to where they were found because many of these small cats have formed colonies. This can be a great way to reduce the number of feral cats but there are a lot of traps, many people help to catch these animals and it will not have much effect on these large numbers. In addition, some veterinarians refuse to sterilize these cats because they do not want them to return to the outside, which is not their natural habitat. Other environmental groups say the released animals can still harm birds and small reptiles and spread disease.

It costs more than money to kill animals and the people who are forced to do it every day are truly pathetic. Many people work in shelters because they love animals, not because they want to kill them.

In Australia, there has been discussion about allowing pet stores to sell untreated animals. Only registered breeders are allowed to own cats. Some shires allow neutered animals as pets. The jury is still out on that, but Australia has about 12,000,000 cats. Many people try to take care of their ‘party’ of feral cats by feeding them and making sure they are healthy. Some risk (and get) injured by catching them and throwing them away or taking them to the vet. Some states in America have small cat benefits.

In the small town I live in, a few women got together and raised money to get cats fixed for free for pet owners. The local vet did his job by paying only a small amount to cover his expenses. In just a few years, the three women had over 400 cats, at no cost to their owners. Perhaps this is something that can be encouraged elsewhere.

This problem is ours. We did it. The cats did not ask to be abandoned. It’s up to us to do something about it. I have no answer. I hope I have informed some of you about this issue, making you think about your values. I’m not sorry if I upset you.
