Gas prices are up for the 4th week in a row at a national average of $3.85 per gallon… I just filled up my tank at $3.64 for a total of 60 dollars!! There is a lot of shopping for Easter candy this weekend. With a 25 mile round trip to work and all the other commitments I have to make, I need to budget for gas money. Something I didn’t normally look at before.
Now we all know that driving a light car saves us money on gas… but that solution doesn’t work for most of us. I can’t remember the last time I got in my car for a ride just for fun, I was probably 16, cruising around in my mom’s minivan blasting Paula Abdul tapes. Fortunately, times have changed and the role requires driving from point A to point B.
Gas officials predict that oil prices will continue to rise well into the summer and may set a record high for the summer of 2008, the highest gas prices in of $4.11 (National Average). So how can we save money and not visit the pump for extra miles? Here are some tips that affect your gas mileage more than you think.
Got Cruise Control? Setting your cruise control while driving on the highway keeps your car at a constant speed, reducing unnecessary speed changes reduces gas usage. This is especially effective for those who have a leading foot and need to use the brakes more often.
Avoid idling too much If your car is running and you are not moving, you are still wasting gas. Idling gets ZERO miles per gallon. So be sure to turn off your engine whenever you sit in the car for more than two minutes waiting for your kids to get in, or for the person in front of you to finish their entire dinner order.
Losing excess weight from your body can slow you down. An extra 100 pounds in your car can reduce your Miles Per Gallon (MPG) by 2 percent, or 8 cents per gallon. The smaller the car, the higher the MPG.
Obey the speed limit That’s the usual advice I hear to save gas… but if you go faster you’ll get there faster so it should all be the same? WRONG. You drop your MPG by almost 33% by speeding and accelerating too fast. Individual vehicles achieve their best fuel economy at different speeds, but MPG drops for most vehicles at speeds above 60 mph. For every 5 miles you drive over 60 mph, you pay an extra 25 cents per gallon.
Know how much you spend on gas Knowing how much you spend on gas will help you make better choices with your wallet. Maybe it’s not a bad idea to let your coworker go to the restaurant? There are free websites you can use to track your expenses. I am currently doing a trial with GasDandy.com.
Driving by gas prices is not a way to save gas. I often check GasBuddy.com to see which gas stations near my work or office have the lowest prices.
