The Days of the Chhuk-Chhuk – Even in India, Old Steam Trains Bring Out the Crowds

The legacy of steam trains in India continues to draw crowds. In Delhi, from armed babies to ex-signers, last week they literally piled up on the railway tracks to face television cameras from the airwaves. at least four voices. In a challenge to all health and safety regulations to fill 100 files bound in the archives of Brussels, fell from the green plastic grass and the red carpet on the railway people had obstacles.

Locomotives Locomotives Locomotives celebrated the end of Heritage Month. Shri Lalu Prasad, Minister of Railways, was the chief guest. Second is Sir Mark Tully, former BBC Delhi correspondent and vice-president of the Indian Railway Society (IRS). Mark is a teacher in his own right.

After most of his 40 years in India (and actually born in Calcutta where his father lived at the time), he is a kind of Grand Old Man, who is considered to have the same sentiments and affections as the Saddhu him. Seeing her with him gets more attention than a normal walk with Tony Blair.

This is not an exaggeration. As Sir Mark walked up the steps of Government House in Delhi with the Honorable Prime Minister, the crowd was delighted that it was not Tony Blair who was drawing their attention. They shouted in Hindi for Mark Tully.

There are many other dignitaries present: the Mayor of Delhi, members of the Railway Board, the Chairman of the IRS and a host of very intelligent and important people. They sit on the platform in beautiful chairs covered in white and placed on plastic grass. On the opposite platform, there is a whole tableau of Indian history with children waving colorful flags and historical stories about Indian railways moving as men run up and down behind the boards driving the trains.

No one really cares. Despite the precious collection of not only VIPs but VVIPs and the war on terror, security is conspicuously absent from the presence of a lovely chocolate brown Labrador led by a soldier on a chair, tail wagging at – enthusiasm.

It is very Indian that in this competition the regularly scheduled trains, the 24 green and cream bogeys accustomed to the 13 million people who travel on the Indian railways every day, take away the passengers. In fact, not once but twice, passenger cargo was released in the collision. People head for the exit, not happy about being denied time. Street theater like this is a part of Delhi life and commands an immediate audience.

Now, the coolies clean the back side adorning the front line in comfortable settes prescribed by Railway Board. Compere seeks silence in different languages. Everyone, sit down. No one cares one bit. Someone shouts loudly into the microphone, partly in Hindi, alternating between “hello, hello, hello, test, test, test” and solemn comments.

Flowers and water bottles have been placed for VVIPs who are considered more than VI. Even the Railway Board has not been so well managed till now. Here comes the sniffer dog, obediently nipping at our feet. An Argentinian man introduces himself and his wife and engages in interesting conversation. He wanted to know what a white Western European woman was doing here.

The salute begins to gather, guarded by soldiers and various hangmen. Mark arrives looking very dapper in a lemon shirt and burgundy herringbone waistcoat. Suddenly there was complete silence. The Minister welcomes everyone; the camera captures the moment from the center of the runway and like the media around the world, they are almost crushing each other to death in their determination to get the best shot. There are crying babies, children running up and down the VIP seats and of course many people who are not media or guests here but found the way without obstacles.

A female soldier’s bottom is literally in my face. A bed is moved to make room for the media collision and the bottom is moved a few inches but the amount of media going in the way is increasing although it is hard to tell if it is intentionally or by force of gravity.

We are now trapped, literally. I’m not really sure if that will keep us away from hitting on Mark Tully or trying to get a free ride on the Fairy Queen, the oldest locomotive still in service, built in 1855 in Leeds, and the pride of Indian Railways. Society.

This piece de resistance (my respect for international relations) is chuk-chuks on the platform in green and gold, with dignity and friendliness. Brightly dressed children waving flags and blowing plastic whistles add to the feeling that we have all returned to a more romantic and less scary time when children could be children and the railways were beautiful, grand and like the symbolic at its best. the new industrial world of the mid-19th century.
