The Days of the Chhuk-Chhuk – Even in India, Old Steam Trains Bring Out the Crowds
The legacy of steam trains in India continues to draw crowds. We are now trapped, literally. I’m not really sure if that will keep us away from hitting on Mark Tully or trying to get a free ride on the Fairy Queen, the oldest locomotive still in service, built in 1855 in Leeds, and the pride of Indian Railways. Society.
This piece de resistance (my respect for international relations) is chuk-chuks on the platform in green and gold, with dignity and friendliness. The Fairy Queen
Guinness World Record holder, this engine is the pride of Indian Railways. It is the world’s oldest locomotive in working condition. Built by Kitson Thompson and Hewitson in Leeds in 1855, this engine was brought back into service by popular demand from 27 September 1997 and ran tourist trains between Delhi and Alwar. This engine was the first exhibit brought to the National Railway Museum in Delhi when the foundation stone was laid in 1971. This locomotive is said to have taken trains to Raniganj during the 1857 Indian War of Independence. The engine weighs 26 tons, has dimensions of 5 feet 6 inches, coal capacity of about 2 tons, wheels with 2-2-2T WT and Stephenson valve gear.

Built in 1930 by the Vulcan Foundry Company Ltd in England, this engine was commissioned by the Indian Railways in 1931 for the GIP Railway, now the Central Railway. The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board at Korba purchased the engine in 1979. Its dimensions are 5 meters 6 inches, its weight is 196.42 tonnes and its length is almost 79 meters. The wheels are 2-8-2, the piston stroke is 30 feet, the water is 6000 gallons and the coal is 14 tons.
WAR CLASS AWE-22907
This engine was one of the war locomotives purchased in large numbers during the early 1940’s and was used for both passenger and freight service. It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, in 1943, for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. Manufacturer’s number 69703, GIP No 6128 and CR No 22907, identify the engine. It weighs 183 tons, has Walshaets gear, two external cylinders, measures 5 feet 6 inches and has 2-8-2 wheels.
With the auspicious name of Shere-e-Punjan, this engine had the privilege of running the last steam train on the Indian Railways. This historic run took place between Firozpur and Jallandhar on 6th December 1995. It usually pulls a train/coach and is reserved for Southern Railway and is based at Shonanur Shed. . Later it was transferred to Northern Railway where it was originally established at Bhatinda shed. Then he was transferred to Ludhiana and finally to Firozpur where he retired. The engine was brought to the National Rail Museum in January 1996. It was built by the Vulcan Foundry in 1955, has a gauge of 5 meters 6 inches, 4-6-2 wheels and is located at the Headquarters of Steam in Rewari.
