What You Can Do to Prevent Childhood Obesity

The next generation, even though they grew taller and were generally well-groomed, still had no problems with their childhood weight. What we now call ‘whole foods’, that is, unprocessed foods that do not contain excess salt and sugar, hormones, antibiotics and additives, are the healthy foods that are recommended every day.

When I was a kid, the word ‘couch potato’ hadn’t been invented yet. In fact, people would have thought you were crazy if you said there was a need to prevent childhood obesity. These problems simply did not exist. The children exercised every day at school through PE classes and recess in the school yard, and asked their parents to ride their bikes or walk to the gym. the playground. There were very few fast food or processed foods, and unlike today, junk food was not the majority of children’s meals. Soda, candy and chips were considered occasional treats rather than everyday staples.

Perhaps the most effective program to prevent childhood obesity is the return to post-World War II eating and exercise habits. Of course, at first it will be difficult for you to keep the children away from hours of surfing the web and watching TV. But once they start riding a bike, playing basketball, soccer, volleyball or baseball for just an hour a day, they will be hooked and want more – just like you and I did.

Let’s face it, no child wants to be overweight or obese. Although you may have to force your child to follow an obesity prevention program at first, once they break their old habits, they will feel and look good. They will look in the mirror and see the good results. I believe they will even come to enjoy their new habits. One thing is certain. For the health of our children, both now and in their childhood, we must address this epidemic of overweight and obese children today.
