I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of the constant message that my natural, curvy, feminine body is unacceptable. I’m tired of being horrified when I hear that five-year-old girls are criticizing their bodies and thinking they need to lose weight. I’m tired of the media forcing their limited and unattainable version of beauty on us.

Today’s undervalued ideal of beauty is a complete creation of the media machine. Nature did not intend for women to look like young men with large breasts, but the ever-increasing media image of this body type defines it as the ultimate beauty.

Without starvation and plastic surgery, 99% of women would not be able to achieve this ideal. So we learn to dislike our naturally beautiful bodies and try hard to change them. A daily deluge of toxic body messages causes eating disorders and widespread unhappiness.

53% of 13-year-old girls and 80% of adult women spend every day not liking their bodies. It doesn’t have to be this way. Of course, people come in all shapes and sizes. We don’t have to let the media continue to define one type of beauty as the ideal. We don’t have to let them ruin countless lives in their quest for more profit.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Media Watchdog program works to change toxic media messages. You can help by signing up for free programs and checking out magazines, TV and radio. Track your findings and report positive and negative results to NEDA.

Every three months, they write at least one letter of praise or protest to the company on behalf of the Watchdogs and publish the results on the NEDA Media Watchdog website. Since the program began in 1997, more than half of the ads they objected to have been stopped.

It’s time for the media to stop attacking our bodies. The Watchdog program gives us a powerful voice for change.

What to look for:

Protests:

* Ads with messages or images designed to make people angry about their body shape or size.

* Promotes independence as the only acceptable body size.

* Shows or advertisements that make fun of overweight people or suggest that they are inferior or unacceptable.

* People who eat food or are starving are distinguished.

* People depicted use food for comfort, stress relief, or companionship.

* Desperate models or actresses portrayed as beautiful or show stars.

* Promotes health and exercise as a way to lose weight rather than a way to get fit, feel good and have fun.

Praise:

* Ads that feature people of all sizes and shapes in a positive way.

* People who eat healthy and good food including desserts.

* Celebrating natural diversity and the joy of life.

If you want to take the campaign further, write your own letter of praise or criticism to the advertiser or the media.

Rake a few feathers and let them know that attacks on our bodies will not be tolerated and positive differences are appreciated. Tell them you won’t buy their product because of offensive advertising.

Don’t forget to thank the company for the positive message as well. Every small movement towards a healthy body diversity is huge. Thank them for being part of a culture that appreciates all aspects of health and beauty.
