The Essential Guide to the Fantasy Basketball Cheat Sheet: Part I

If you want to win a fantasy basketball league, you have to do your homework now, BEFORE THE DRAFT. The easiest way to do this is to make a Cheat Sheet.

In the past, I’ve used two methods for making my cheat sheet: 1.) I use a large Post-It note to display my information and stick it on a shelf above my computer screen in an easy-to-see row. ; or 2.) I make the old blank 8 ½” by 11″ sheet. Whichever you choose is just a matter of your convenience. The important part is the information you put on these cheat sheets.

My first cheat sheet is for each statistical category that counts in the league. Common Yahoo Fantasy NBA classification categories are: % Field Goals, % Free Throws, Three Pointers Made, Total Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals, Blocks and Turnovers.

Each category is important, so you need to know who are the leaders in each and who are the Deal Breakers in each category. It is almost impossible to win your league and be in last place in one of these points categories. You can’t always be strong in all categories, but you have to be at least average in them.

The tools used to collect this information are:

Sortable statistics found under the “Players” link for each Yahoo Fantasy NBA league;

Yahoo Sports NBA Sortable Stats http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/stats/byposition?pos=PG,SG,G,GF,SF,PF,F,FC,C ; SY

The NBA.com Statistics web page http://www.nba.com/statistics/

Using these tools is just a matter of making a list. But you need to use all these tools to make a list of each statistical category in order to get all the angles of how the players received those statistics. Prior to the draft, Yahoo Fantasy NBA’s “Players” link only had statistics compiled from last season. Yahoo Sports NBA stats and NBA.Com’s stats both give you points-per-game averages that tell a more complete story of last season when players missed more games than injury or suspension.

NBA.com’s 48-Minute Stats is one of the best tools for collecting league statistics. Plotting stats for young rookies, inexperienced or injured players who will get more time this season can best be done with per 48 minute stats. It shows you how much impact these players had during the game, despite the lack of playing time.

In making the Cheat Sheet, I try to list the leaders in each statistical category that I know I’m going to draft, from the category leader to the better-than-average player in that stat. I give more weight in the shooting percentage category to the players with the most shots and kills. It’s a good idea to use Yahoo Sports NBA Statistics to find out who is the best statistical user with shooting percentage. This helps eliminate players who barely scored or shot last season in the percentage rankings.

It’s also important to find players that will hurt your chances of winning statistical categories. I call these players “Deal Breakers”. Deal Breaker is usually good in most stat categories, but absolutely terrible in one category, so horrible that you won’t win the league. The Biggest Deal Breaker in Fantasy Basketball is Shaq. Shaq shoots more free throws than any player in the league and shoots a pathetic 53.1% from the free throw line. He probably won’t make more free throws in a night than your starting 5 can expect… Find Deal Breakers and remove them from your draft list.

It’s also good to look at stats like turnover assists and steals versus turnover rate. NBA.Com’s statistics will give you access to this information. Assist-to-turnover ratio can be a very important tool in choosing which point guards to draft. Any player with a high steal to turnover rate is a good pick for your draft.

I always try to focus on shooting percentage first when I draft, but I also see players getting a lot of steals in Yahoo Fantasy leagues. Steals seem to lead to more assists, higher percentage shots and more free throws.

Turnovers are the most overlooked statistic in Fantasy Basketball. People gravitate toward high-flying, high-scoring players when drafting fantasy leagues. I find that I have more success in winning fantasy leagues by drafting strong, less-than-spectacular players rather than superstars who are fun to watch. Some of the players leading the league in turnovers are the game’s superstars: Allen Iverson, Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant and Steve Francis. The other more effective way in Fantasy football with these players, regarding the rotation would be: Donyell Marshall, Michael Finley, Raef LaFrentz and Shane Battier.

In part II of this article we will look at setting up a Cheat Sheet board layout.
