Horseshoes – Stance and Footwork

There are many different points of throwing horseshoes. One element that is often overlooked is the stance and footwork that occurs during throwing. It’s time to review these basics and help put your game where it needs to be (hitting rings all day long).

First thing’s first… solve! Your body needs to work properly throughout the swing so relax. Rest before playing if necessary. Do everything possible to rest before you pack your horseshoes. Think spaghetti, soft stuff, think free! Good, now on to positioning.

You want to start in a squatting position. If you’ve ever bowled before, you know what I’m talking about. The knee is slightly bent with a little spring in it. Now, most right-handed pitchers will throw from the left side of the bullpen. Personally, I’ve tried it both ways and I’m more comfortable with the left side. I can line up with more contrarian stakes from here on out. I can also easily keep track of how far my stakes go and make sure I don’t cross the dirty line.

Start by taking your left foot and step it about 6 to 8 inches behind your right foot. This is your balance foot. Most of your weight should be on your right leg at this point. Left leg back, weight on right leg, knees bent, legs loose… let’s do some movement.

When you bring your hooves on your back, you want to stay on the right side. Your right hip should start to bend and your right knee should now bend a little more. Remember that at this point your weight is still on your right leg. Now as you bring the horseshoe back (during the upswing), start moving your left leg forward as the horseshoe approaches your right knee. As it rolls around the knee, you should shift your weight to your left leg. As the horseshoe rises and enters the release, you should continue to shift your weight and straighten your left leg. In the final position, your left leg will be almost straight and your right leg will barely touch the ground.

Keep your shoulders square to the opposite pole before, during and after your throw. Your feet should point to your target, the pole, throughout the entire swing. This is important! If you let your left foot drift, you can throw the entire balance off your throw. Your horse’s hooves may begin to spin the wrong way or you may throw your target to the left or right of the stake. Most misses are due to poor coordination which is 90% controlled by your stance and foot movement during the swing.

So how much should you do with the left foot? Not far at all. Take normal steps. Imagine if you were to start walking. You only need one small step to strengthen your casting. Most of the power comes from your legs and not your arms so you don’t want to do that here. The most important part of your walk is making sure you end up with your left foot pointing to the pole. It is too easy to “step” on the right foot. If you don’t walk straight, your left leg may bend a little. As discussed earlier, this type of improper manipulation results in bad throws. If you need it, work on the swing step without the horseshoe in hand. You can still go to the event and you can do it inside. You can still hold a horseshoe if you feel you need the weight, but it can make everyone inside very nervous. Remember, practice makes perfect! Good luck!
